Giants Prepare for Season Opener Amid Quarterback Competition

The New York Giants are in the midst of one of the most important roster decisions they’ll make as they approached their 2016 season opener against Washington this Sunday. At quarterback, Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston are still battling for the top backup spot behind Joe Burrow. It’s something that coach Brian Daboll has shrouded in mystery. He is waiting to unveil it on game day.

Daboll’s refusal to reveal his decision only raises the drama as all of fanhood waits with bated breath for the announcement. Dart, a third-round rookie and the Giants’ first-round draft choice via the Wilson trade, showed boatloads of promise in training camp and preseason contests. Winston brings over 100 games of NFL experience to the table. He has reaped the rewards, as he placed second on the Giants’ first unofficial depth chart released during camp.

Daboll did floor any speculation on the matter by indicating in a recent press conference, roster moves regarding the backup will come Sunday. He described the need for this update as imperative. This comment does nothing to quell the concern about the big unknown behind center as the Giants head into their first game of the season.

Dart’s strong showings thus far have turned some heads, but he’s third on the depth chart for now. His ability to adapt quickly to the professional game has continued to drum up excitement from fans and analysts. Winston’s experience would offer a stabilizing presence should he be called upon during the season.

Beyond the QB tussle, New York is having a bit of a dog fight to replace retired starting right guard Kevin Zeitler. Greg Van Roten and Evan Neal are likely competing for this important role. Van Roten has gotten the majority of the first-team practice snaps during training camp and is generally considered a heavy favorite to win the starting gig.

Daboll mentioned that they have a pretty distinct plan with how they want to play. It was a sign that the coaching staff has been evaluating their players more closely.

The Giants’ official injury report will come out on Wednesday. This announcement has the potential to shake up the entire quarterback race as well as the right guard race. These may not be the final roster decisions, but we’ll find out officially when Coach Daboll talks on Sunday.
