New York Giants now going after Jaxson Dart. The former Ole Miss star and 25th overall pick in last year’s draft, the team is riding out the storm through a difficult season. Coach Brian Daboll and General Manager Joe Schoen believe that Dart’s athleticism and unique skill set could be the catalyst needed to improve the Giants’ struggling offense. The new team received intense pressure to increase its outputs, mainly its performance in that all-important win-loss column. As a result, Dart’s recent play has given rise to considerable excitement — by fans and management alike.
Over the past two weeks, Dart has hardly touched the turf. He hardly played at all (just six snaps, mainly special short-yardage/goal line/red zone scenarios). His athleticism comes into play and has already had a huge impact on how the Giants’ offense functions. Over the summer, this team underwent a dramatic shift with Dart in the starting lineup. Excited fans greeted the news with chants of “We want Dart!” as they hoped and waited for movement on a change.
While Dart was not the Giants’ first choice during the offseason, the coaching staff and management have recognized his readiness to serve as the team’s backup quarterback. They judged his best efforts in training camp and were ultimately happy with his productive preseason. So, to try and change their luck on the offensive side of the ball, they hired him.
Daboll acknowledged Dart’s integration into the game plan by stating, “Well we put him in the game the last two weeks.” This decision reflects a broader strategy that includes multiple checkpoints for Dart’s development, indicating that the organization is committed to nurturing his potential.
General Manager Schoen deeply resonated with the concept of Dart expanding their scope. He wants to see this change occurring post-draft. His support fits in with the generally increasing agreement that Dart has the skill to be the guy to start changing the direction of the currently awful team. The Giants are hoping that with Dart steering the ship, they’re able to get back on the right path going forward.
After a lot of back and forth on Tuesday, the team opted to go with Dart. This decision came on the heels of Daboll’s statements that teased a potential quarterback switch earlier that week. This pivot represents a critical moment for both Daboll and Schoen. Their futures with the organization might depend on Dart’s success on the field immediately.
Beyond impressive athletic skills, Dart possesses a terrific work ethic. After being cut this week, it doesn’t seem that way to the rest of us, but he might just consider this part of the challenge. As he ascends into this new role — alongside Schoen — Daboll is brimming with optimism. They are convinced he is the guy to make a meaningful difference to the Giants’ fortunes.
Dart’s few snaps thus far are only a foundation to build upon. Collectively, they might just set the stage for an important comeback story for him and the Giants. As he gains more experience, expectations are high that he will improve alongside the offense, leading to better results in upcoming games.
