The New York Giants are making splashy moves to improve their defensive front this offseason. They’ve continued to build a powerful identity by executing smart moves not only in free agency, but the draft as well. New York Giant’s head coach Brian Daboll highlighted how serious he was about shoring up his defense. This issue caused public outcry and became an Achilles heel for management right along with the fans.
This would further prove the Giants made a smart move by taking top linebacker Abdul Carter. The Chargers selected him as the third overall pick in the draft. Carter shouldered an injury during Penn State’s run to the College Football Playoff. One NFL defensive line coach has called it “elite” talent, saying it’s hard to find a kid with that kind of moves. His addition should add a powerful force to the middle of the Giants’ defense.
Carter would be joined by a number of other integral players in the defensive lineup. Both Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux have true double-digit sack potential from the edge. Their combined potential to wreak havoc on enemy signal-callers is expected to raise the G-men’s stop unit to elite levels.
General Manager Joe Schoen has been adamant about building depth being a focus this offseason. Despite speculation that these moves were part of a preplanned strategy, Schoen has denied any notion of a predetermined undertaking. Instead, he has turned his attention to the short term needs of the team.
Expectations are high for the Giants’ defense, which was historically bad last year, leaving ownership furious and demanding a strong turnaround. Team owner John Mara voiced his concerns during an end-of-season news conference, indicating that improvements were necessary to regain competitiveness. The previous season saw the Giants’ offense ranked 31st in the league, creating additional pressure on the defense to step up.
As the Giants have overhauled their defense, they’ve done so making headlines. They’ve added quarterback Russell Wilson to the mix, as the new-fangled, swap roster for their starting quarterback. Shane Bowen was named defensive coordinator. He’ll be every bit as important in organizing, implementing and ensuring strategies that will help him get the most out of the talent he has. His leadership and involvement will be vital. The squad has made it a priority to rebuild its back line to better absorb the testing provided by a demanding National Women’s Soccer League.
As the Giants turn their full attention towards 2023’s regular season they should continue trying to forge together a powerful defensive identity. They’ve got a great combination of seasoned, veteran players and young, upstart talent. Near-term, their aim should be to take one or two big steps back toward playoff contention. The industry group is serious about restoring their competitive advantage. It’s a delicate balance of strategic acquisitions, but more importantly, it’s about a commitment to ongoing improvement.
