As stated above, the New York Giants are in full evaluation mode when it comes to their current stable of quarterbacks. After a shocking beginning to the season, as they’ve gone 0-3 so far. Following their recent 22-9 loss against the Kansas City Chiefs, Head Coach Brian Daboll announced that the team is reviewing every position, signaling potential changes ahead.
Daniel Jones infamously began his career with the Giants in 2019, coming in as a rookie to displace long-time giant Eli Manning. In these six seasons with his franchise, it hasn’t been easy. Under the duration of his time there, he produced all of one playoff appearance and one postseason win at that. Given the recent string of poor outings that led to Jones getting benched before eventually being cut from the team’s roster, this decision makes plenty of sense.
Even with these struggles, Jones looked like a potential star in the making during preseason action. He managed to overachieve way beyond himself, completing 32 of 47 passes for 372 yards, throwing three touchdowns and no interceptions. He was downright dominant in practice, leading to great expectations for his big summer to translate to the regular season. It’s been a tough go for the Giants. Jones has had difficulty translating his success in the preseason into performances during the regular season thus far.
After the ugly loss to the Chiefs, Daboll repeatedly called for “better” to be better. Most importantly, he took specific aim at the myriad issues that torpedoed their last game. “Well, look, we’re going through the tape right now,” he stated. This indicates that the coaching staff is watching film after each game to figure out what should be changed going into the next game.
The good news for Giants fans is that their team has a rich history of transitioning from veteran quarterbacks to rookies. A perfect counterexample is Eli Manning’s Week 11 debut during the 2004 season when he replaced Kurt Warner. Manning’s eventual success in leading the Giants to two Super Bowl victories serves as a hopeful reminder for fans as they consider potential changes at quarterback.
Fans cheered with glee when Tommy DeVito, aka “Dart” came on the field. It was in the midst of yet another seventh heaven home opener save vs. the Mighty Mighty Chiefs. Although he only played three snaps, his entry elicited cheers from the crowd, indicating a desire among supporters for a fresh start at quarterback.
Former BYU quarterback and current New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson had a rough outing this past Sunday against the New England Patriots. He ended up with 160 yards passing and two interceptions. This performance can only add additional confusion to debates about quarterback play among New York franchises.
Daboll pointed out that he has put Jones in position to succeed from a game-play standpoint the past two weeks. That’s undoubtedly because the competition for the quarterback position isn’t finished yet. As the Giants continue to assess their options in a challenging season, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if changes are on the horizon.
