After LeBron James recently told him that he’d average 60 points a game if he were to play in the 1970s, Giannis Antetokounmpo had the perfect response. LeBron James said something very interesting on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show.” He explained that had Antetokounmpo been around when LeBron was playing, it would’ve been normal for him to drop 250 points a game. Although Antetokounmpo was grateful for the recognition, he stressed that it’s not really right to compare basketball eras.
Antetokounmpo was thankful for that high praise from James, perhaps the most revered player in the league. Yet he immediately pointed out the difficulties of contrasting his modern playing era with the 1970s. His reflections really drove home the remarkable contrast between the two eras.
“Great compliment, but I don’t like comparing eras,” – Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Today, Antetokounmpo humorously speculated scoring like that in the ’70s might’ve gone for 300-plus points.
“It would probably be more like 275, not 250,” – Giannis Antetokounmpo.
To his credit, he retreated pretty quickly from the jesting suggestion. He really stressed the idea that there is an epochal difference between the times.
LeBron James explicitly stated that he did not mean to offend any players from the past. Rather, he wanted to show how much the game of basketball has changed throughout the decades. Antetokounmpo admitted these adjustments, pointing out that the game has evolved tremendously since the 1970s.
“It’s totally different, so you can’t compare this era with that era,” – Giannis Antetokounmpo.
He went into some more detail about how today’s game is different, thanks to the technology and things that have been learned through the years. Antetokounmpo said he’d like to be able to score like that in today’s era.
“I wish at this era that I play at now — 2025 — I wish I could score 250 points today,” – Giannis Antetokounmpo.
