Manchester United Women forward Geyse had an otherwise under-the-radar move joining Gotham FC on loan be arguably the biggest of the day. This temporary move will continue through the remainder of the National Women’s Soccer League season. It is likely that this season will conclude in November. After a tumultuous one-year stint at Manchester United, Geyse’s journey to Gotham represents a fresh start in a new environment.
Though Geyse had high hopes for her career after making her Manchester United debut in 2023, her tenure with the club was overshadowed by personal hardships. She missed four games in January and February after her brother was tragically shot. Her return to action came in March against Leicester, but the emotional toll was evident. Manchester United knew what they were getting into with Geyse. They worked with her and her representatives every step of the way to find the right outlet for her that would bring her joy and fulfillment.
"Staying in a place where we don't feel happy is an agonising and lonely feeling. Every day seems heavier, and the simple fact of being there becomes a burden," Geyse shared in an emotional message on Instagram after her return against Leicester.
The decision to join Gotham FC was made with the intent to provide Geyse with a supportive environment and fresh start. Manchester United has committed to the federal government long-term, providing support through this ongoing transition period. Geyse will join Gotham FC through the end of the season. This will allow her the opportunity to immerse herself into a fresh team culture and refind her joy for the game.
"Sometimes, the desire for change arises as an urgent need, but the fear of the unknown or insecurity about the future can paralyse us. However, it is essential to remember that we deserve to be in places and situations that bring us happiness and fulfilment. That's the only way we can grow," Geyse expressed, reflecting on her decision.
Manchester United’s long-standing commitment to Geyse’s personal well-being should go unquestioned. The club has provided an unbelievable level of support, making sure she’s felt seen, heard, and appreciated during this journey. Loaning Geyse to Gotham FC would serve to reinforce Barca’s commitment to prioritizing a player’s mental health. They really do care about her well-being and happiness.
