Gerrard Declines Rangers Return Leaving Door Open for Future Opportunities

Then-former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard held talks with Rangers’ board of directors. Ultimately, that meant he made the difficult decision to turn down the opportunity to return as head coach. Following a meeting in London, the decision to resign was made by principal figures from the Rangers organization. Also in attendance were Kevin Thelwell, Patrick Stewart, Paraag Marathe and Andrew Cavenagh. Fans quickly saw him as the favorite to supplant Russell Martin. Unfortunately, Gerrard felt that the timing wasn’t right for him to assume that role just yet.

Gerrard’s discussions with Rangers officials left a positive impression on him regarding the owners and their vision for the club’s future. He decided to pass on the potential opportunity, but he has indicated willingness to reengage down the road on the Rangers project. Gerrard expressed his appreciation for the convening. He was glad to get the forum to make his case and talk about the club’s long-term direction. Now 56, he is keen to explore the possibility of taking charge of Rangers again. That’s a testament to his deep connection with the club where he left incredible lasting legacies as a player.

As a player, Gerrard is hailed for winning Liverpool the club’s first Premier League title among many other honors. He has since moved into management, where his experience in the Middle East and Europe have proven invaluable. As a manager, he has been at the helm in elite tournaments such as the Champions League and Europa League. That experience catapults him to the top of the list of candidates for the Rangers position.

Apart from his obvious passion for the opportunity, one thing that worked in Gerrard’s favour was that he took initiative to form a future backroom staff. He called upon people like Gary McAllister, Jermain Defoe and Steve Holland. Perhaps most importantly, it demonstrates his commitment to building a deep and robust support structure to complement the head coach role.

By walking away from negotiations, Rangers are now free to look at other candidates. They leave the door wide open for further negotiations to continue with Gerrard. This degree of flexibility would get both parties closer to being able to reconcile their goals sooner.

Current conditions have left Gerrard in limbo without a managerial role after his last appointment finished in disappointment. His experience, pedigree, and ability to breed success make him an appealing prospect for any club serious about improving their competitive advantage. This isn’t a rejection of the Rangers club itself, but rather a telling sign that this decision to decline the Rangers position was thought out.
