George Pickens Thrives in Early Days with Cowboys

George Pickens is 6-foot-3, 200 pounds. The Dallas Cowboys signed the dynamic wide receiver this past offseason from the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he’s wasted no time dazzling in his new home. While his time with the team has been brief, Pickens has shown phenomenal talent and quick acclimation in the practice field already. He demonstrated his jaw-dropping talent for quick change. On just the second play from scrimmage, he nonchalantly yanked in a sideline pass over the outstretched hand of a defender.

In 2023, Pickens became the first receiver in Pittsburgh history to catch 135 passes and set team records for receptions and receiving yards. This absurd number speaks to his exceptional ability and speaks to his ability to be a true game-changing weapon for the Cowboys. Pickens is optimistic as he steps into his new position. He understands that he is still developing, but he does not foresee struggles in learning the Cowboys’ offense.

Even Dak Prescott, the Cowboys’ starting quarterback, has lauded Pickens’ knack for beating defenders in one-on-one matchups. No matter when he finds the field, Prescott is excited about the electric potential between Pickens and fellow wideout CeeDee Lamb. The two players were a match made in heaven. Their previous bond enhances the squad’s synergy as they blend in these formative days.

Less than a month into his tenure with the Cowboys, Pickens looks to be blending right in. He collaborates deeply with Lamb, employing tools such as the Jugs machine. Along with Campbell and new defensive coordinator Brian Flores, they scheme up plays together in organized team activities (OTAs). It’s easy to see the connection between them, and even easier to see that both of these players are committed to becoming their respective bests, together.

“He obviously is a tremendous athlete, but I love watching him in meetings because in meetings he’s been so dialed in, taking great notes.” – Brian Schottenheimer, Offensive Coordinator

Beyond what he’s done on the field, Pickens has wowed people in meeting rooms as well. Schottenheimer noted that Pickens is eager to learn, demonstrating intentionality that is commendable for someone still adjusting to a new team. He knows he’s a little bit behind the other veterans, but he is determined to get up to speed.

Beyond his physical profile, Pickens’ elite traits would help elevate a relatively bland Cowboys offense. He observed that offensive plays are the same around the league. Having this mutual understanding made Kevin’s transition into his new role a seamless one. His impressive footwork and extreme agility have been the most productive first impression, including catching the eyes of coaches and teammates.

“Very, very talented guy. When you can add him alongside a CeeDee and the rest of the weapons we have, I’m super excited.” – Dak Prescott

You can feel the optimism across the Pickens’ arrival has created excitement across the organization, for ownership, coaching staff and players so far. His projected influence on the squad has generated an excitement that might take form in a success on the grass.

Pickens’ past encounters with Prescott have created the groundwork for their working relationship, as well. They’ve long had a unique rivalry, one born from their like-minded specialties and developed into respect through years of working out for one another. This camaraderie is crucial to allowing them to work together professionally on the pitch. They are looking to make a deep connection on game day.

“I see a guy that’s maturing. I see a guy that we’re excited to put out there and watch him grow and get better.” – Brian Schottenheimer

The Cowboys are excited to see how Pickens can grow and develop within their system. His past performance with the Steelers raised questions about his adaptation to a new environment. Early signs indicate that he is ready to put in the work required to thrive.

At the end of training, all eyes will be on Pickens and Lamb. They were putting in plenty of hours developing their chemistry and sharpening the Cowboys’ offensive game plan. With both players showcasing their abilities in practice and demonstrating a commitment to improvement, fans can expect an exciting season ahead.
