Genesis Invitational Moves to Torrey Pines Amid L.A. Wildfires

The Genesis Invitational, a prestigious event on the PGA Tour, has made a dramatic shift in location this year, moving from its traditional venue at Riviera to the South Course at Torrey Pines. This relocation was necessitated by the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. Despite the sudden change, Torrey Pines, a course with a formidable reputation having hosted two U.S. Opens, was tournament-ready, fresh off hosting the Farmers Insurance Open just three weeks prior.

The tournament kicked off under challenging conditions, with the course living up to its reputation for difficulty. Only three players managed to break 70, and ten others managed to break par. Harris English, who clinched victory at Torrey Pines three weeks ago with an 8-under par, the highest score to par in six PGA Tour events this year, found the course's toughness well-documented.

Denny McCarthy emerged as a standout performer, ending a challenging day on a high note. He closed with a birdie-eagle finish for a 4-under 68, securing a one-shot lead over Séamus Power and Patrick Rodgers after the first round. McCarthy's attitude towards the game played a significant role in his success.

"I came out with the attitude that I was just going to have fun and try to embrace it as much as I could." – McCarthy

The course's difficulty was exacerbated by the wind, as noted by Michael Kim.

"It's blowing only like 10 to 15 [mph], but 10 to 15 here is basically 25 to 30 at other places." – Michael Kim

This sentiment was echoed by other players as they navigated the demanding layout of Torrey Pines. The 461-yard fifth hole proved particularly challenging, playing into the cold wind. Scottie Scheffler, the world's No. 1 player, described his experience on the course's par 5s.

"Typically when you step up to a par 5, you feel like you're going to have a good chance to make birdie. But two of the par 5s, if you make par you feel like you did a pretty good job." – Scheffler

Scheffler began finding his rhythm after a late start, with four birdies in seven holes, though he finished 2 over for the rest of his round. His play drew attention as he detailed his approach to one of the challenging holes.

"Driver, 3-wood, 9-iron. And I smoked all three of them, too. I did — I striped 'em all." – Scheffler

Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth returned to using a 7-wood for the first time since the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, adapting his strategy to meet the course's demands. Collin Morikawa also highlighted the adjustments necessary due to the tough conditions.

"We're hitting 4-iron. That's a hole where it still plays tough, but normally you're hitting 8-iron." – Morikawa

Beyond the competition on the course, The Genesis Invitational made significant contributions off it. The tournament donated $1 million to Riviera and committed $8 million in value to relief and recovery efforts in Los Angeles, primarily through donating 100 tournament cars.
