Gary Woodland Joins U.S. Ryder Cup Team as Final Vice Captain

PGA champion Gary Woodland has been chosen as the fifth and final U.S. Ryder Cup team vice captain. He’ll play in service of the moniker attached to captain Keegan Bradley. At 41 years of age, Woodland was a delightful surprise to be on the roster and adds immense experience to the team. He’s filled his resume with four PGA Tour victories, highlighted by his 2019 U.S. Open title. His appointment comes as the U.S. team aims to reclaim the Ryder Cup from Europe at Bethpage Black in New York, scheduled for September 26-28.

Woodland’s endorsement comes from one of vice captains Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker to back Bradley. He has a deep, lived experience in the sport of competitive golf. Most famously, he helped lead the U.S. to victory at the 2019 Presidents Cup down under in Australia, earning 1-1/2 points towards his team’s historic 16-14 victory.

In February, Woodland was honored with the PGA Tour Courage Award. This prestigious accolade recognized his miraculous comeback to the pro circuit following brain surgery in early 2023. This honor is a testament both to his grit and his devotion to the game of baseball.

Woodland thrilled to make his first Ryder Cup trip. Whether that’s in the capacity of a vice captain or a player, he’s excited to take on that responsibility.

“Keegan’s passion for this event is contagious and I am thrilled to be a part of it.” – Gary Woodland

Bradley shared his admiration for Woodland, stating, “I have an incredible amount of respect and admiration for Gary and all he has accomplished in this game.” He emphasized Woodland’s understanding of high-pressure situations, noting that “as a major champion and someone who is still competing at a high level, he is well aware of the demands of performing on golf’s biggest stages.”

Woodland undoubtedly made a strong statement to the team captain, as they get ready to meet on the doorsteps of Paris for the Ryder cup.

“With just over two months to go until we arrive at Bethpage, I am fully committed to doing everything I can to help Keegan as well as our team of vice captains and players.” – Gary Woodland
