Garrett Wilson just became a lot more optimistic about his long term future with the New York Jets! He signed a four-year contract extension worth an eye-popping $130 million. This landmark deal ensures that Wilson gets paid $90 million. As a consequence, he has consistently been one of the most highly ranked wide receivers in the National Football League (NFL). This extension is an impressive achievement for the young player and the Atlanta front office—a big win for both sides. It’s the first time since the current financial system of the NFL that the Jets have extended a former first-round pick in their first year of eligibility.
Wilson’s new contract, by comparison, averages $32.5 million per year. This places him in line to become the fifth highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL. The 24-year-old Olympic, WC, & EA champs’ history-making debut! He is just one of five players in league history to record more than 1,000 receiving yards and 80 catches in each of his first three years. His performance thus far has raised the expectation to that level. He was the 10th overall pick back in 2022, and he still hasn’t stopped rewriting the Jets’ record book.
Just last season, Wilson set career-highs across the board. He scored seven touchdowns and increased his reception and receiving yard total dramatically. He has consistently demonstrated his ability to adapt, having caught passes from seven different quarterbacks throughout his career, including notable players such as Aaron Rodgers and Zach Wilson.
Wilson said he was excited to continue his development with the Jets.
“I’m hopeful I’m a Jet for life and that we get this thing rolling and that all of our best days are ahead of us.” – Garrett Wilson
This extension not only reflects Wilson’s on-field contributions but underscores the Jets’ commitment to building a competitive team. Wilson gets ready to play ball with Justin Fields, his old Ohio State teammate. If spring training is any indicator, he should be primed for another breakout season!
The Jets are doing their best to avoid one by pursuing an immediate contract extension. They’re reportedly in discussions to work out an extension with cornerback Sauce Gardner, selected fourth overall in 2022. It’s a smart move as the non-profit looks to lock in its young talent while making plans for the upcoming seasons ahead.
Wilson still had two years remaining on his rookie deal. That deal comes with a fifth-year option, guaranteeing him $16.8 million in 2026. This extension increases the Jets’ confidence in his long-term potential. He is now the first player since George Sauer to record three straight 1,000 yd. receiving campaigns.
