Leah Galton, a winger for Manchester United, are both full of confidence. Her team prepare to meet Chelsea in the FA Cup Final at Wembley this Sunday. Galton is confident her side has the belief and ability to defeat Chelsea. Whatever the result against Bayern, they will be looking to inflict the first domestic defeat on them this season. The match would prove an equally pivotal moment in Manchester United’s season. It’s a big opportunity for Galton, who has seen her share of bad luck as a finalist in years past.
Manchester United storms to the final with an ominous intent. They are powered by the revenge fantasy of two close 1-0 defeats to Chelsea earlier on in the season. In spite of these disappointments, Galton is keen to note her team’s development and fortitude. “We think we can beat them and we know we can beat them, but then you look at the stats and their season,” she stated. The player understands the challenge that lies in front of him but believes there is a path to success.
Last year’s emotional trophy lift at Wembley was a mixed memory for Galton. Less than three minutes into the game, she broke her tibia. The injury ruptured multiple ligaments in her ankle as well, taking her off the pitch by halftime. Even as she joined her teammates in post-match celebrations on crutches, the reality of her injury made it hard for her to get lost in the jubilation. “I tried to celebrate with the girls but couldn’t and ended up having an early night,” she reflected.
This was the first season where Galton’s squad, who placed 3rd in the league, showed their pursuit to consistently compete further up the table. “This year finishing third and getting to a final, it shows we mean business,” she remarked. And as they look ahead to Sunday’s final, Tchouaffé knows they are on the precipice of something special.
“It’s a hard week. Everyone’s a little nervous,” Galton said. We need to train these things, every day, all the time it’s game preparation time, penalties are now entering training. It’s a big week and a lot to take on and a lot to take in. I get the vibe everyone’s ready to go and repeat the success we had last year.
Galton is particularly sensitive to the added finals pressure and peculiar dynamic at play. Finals are strange, finals can be cagey,” she said, acknowledging that both teams are likely to feel the stress of the moment. She feels ready for the challenge. Galton has featured with Rach Williams, who was a mentor figure for her in their final game together. Now, she’s focused on making sure that nothing—injuries included—will control how she performs this go-around.
“We know who we’re playing against and we know how to beat them. It’s just putting it into practice on the day,” Galton affirmed. She continues to keep her eyes on the prize, though—a good performance and showing the Manchester United team’s potential that it’s always had all season.
As Sunday approaches, Galton’s resolve strengthens. “That’s what’ll make it feel even better when we do win,” she stated confidently. “I’ll speak positively, so when we win it’ll be a great feeling.” Her optimism reflects not only her personal journey but her team’s collective ambitions as they aim to secure a historic victory against an unbeaten Chelsea side.
