Gaël Monfils etched his name into the history books on Saturday by winning the ASB Classic in Auckland, becoming the oldest player to ever claim an ATP Tour singles title. At 38 years and four months old, Monfils surpassed the previous record held by Roger Federer, who achieved a similar feat in 2019. Monfils secured his 13th tour-level title by defeating Belgium's Zizou Bergs with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Monfils' journey on the ATP Tour began with his first title in 2005. Over the years, he has shown remarkable consistency and skill, reaching a career-high ranking of world No. 6 in 2016. His latest triumph in Auckland adds another remarkable chapter to his storied career.
During the final match against Bergs, Monfils displayed exceptional form. Bergs struggled to gain an advantage, managing to win only 33% of his second serve points. Monfils capitalized on this vulnerability, breaking Bergs' serve at his first attempt in the second set. The set concluded after just 48 minutes, further cementing Monfils' dominance.
"It means a lot (to win). Age is a number," – Gaël Monfils
Monfils expressed his joy following the victory, emphasizing that age does not define his capabilities on the court. He remarked on the significance of continuing to play at such a high level even after two decades on the professional circuit.
"But we keep working. I keep believing that I can play high-quality tennis and I have been showing it this week so I am very happy. (My first title) was 20 years ago. I still have the passion to play tennis. I feel I’m still striking the ball very well. Hopefully, many more to come." – Gaël Monfils
Looking ahead, Monfils is set to face his compatriot, 21-year-old Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, in the first round of his next tournament. His attention now turns to the Australian Open, where he hopes to continue showcasing his passion and prowess on the tennis court.
