Gaby Lewis stamped her excellence in leadership and batting with a match-winning 42 runs. It was an excellent display from Harty as it inspired Ireland to a 63-run win against Italy in the Women’s T20 World Cup European qualifier. Ireland battled valiantly in the match to clinch their place in the global qualifiers. These qualifiers will be held in Nepal. As head coach, the Lewis-led Ireland team achieved a high of 166 runs. They did so with the loss of only four wickets in their 20 overs.
Lewis was the linchpin in the long inning. He made his mark early and England’s challenge up and against it then with Ireland 59 for two in response. Her collaboration with Orla Prendergast proved to be the most essential for her success. Orla’s skillful knock of 23 runs rescued the innings and set a solid platform for her team. The skipper’s efforts came to an end when she was dismissed by Lenny Sims, but not before she had significantly boosted Ireland’s score.
In addition to her batting performance, Lewis made two vital catches in the field, demonstrating her all-around capabilities and commitment to the team’s defensive efforts. Her contributions were key in keeping pressure on Italy for much of the match.
Ireland’s historic clash and victory with Italy adds to their fantastic run in the tournament. They cheered just as loud for victories over Germany and the Netherlands. With this win, Ireland further cements its place in the race for qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The team remains focused as they prepare for their next challenge against Germany on Sunday.
This is no doubt due in large part to Lewis’s leadership, which has driven Ireland into the quarterfinals. Our home team remains well positioned in our new quarter! They’re on the verge of clinching one of the last four spots for next summer’s global qualifiers. Lewis and her team are currently embroiled in a dog-fight of an early European qualifier for the Women’s T20 World Cup. The world is watching them as they continue a fight to earn a place on the world stage.
