Fred VanVleet—three-time NBA All-Star and 2019 World Champion—is looking to turn pro. He’s on the verge of signing a two-year, $50 million extension to remain with the Houston Rockets. It’s clearly working as the 31-year-old guard continues to have the time of his life. He is changing the tone of the franchise from a mediocre lottery team into a playoff contender. His new deal will carry a player option for the 2026-27 season, ensuring that VanVleet has flexibility as he continues through this next stage of his career.
Over the 2024-25 season, VanVleet has averaged 14.1 points per game, his lowest scoring season since the 2018-19 season. Given the entire picture of his amazing playoffs performance, that’s mighty impressive. During that postseason run, he averaged 18.7 points per game, showing that he could raise his level of play when the games were high-stakes. Over the final four games of that series, he served as the catalyst while putting forth an impressive average of 24.3 points. He was incredibly efficient, shooting 56% from the field and an absurd 64% from three-point range.
In the early summer of 2023, VanVleet signed with the Houston Rockets on a three-year contract. In only his second full season, he’s already achieved MVP worthy status, leading the team to a surprising turnaround. In only his second season with the Cougars, Houston went from 22 wins the year before to 41 under his leadership. His stunning transformation has played no small part in establishing the Rockets as legitimate contenders to win it all.
The Rockets’ blockbuster trade was the addition of Kevin Durant. This new acquisition has us poised for an even more exciting next season, so stay tuned! As a one-time All-Star and member of the Toronto Raptors’ championship-winning team in 2019, VanVleet brings both experience and skill to Houston. Over his nine-year career, he has averaged 14.9 points per game. Most importantly, he distributes 5.7 assists a game, proving to be an efficient playmaker and dangerous scorer.
