Frankie Luvu, the Carolina Panthers’ linebacker, will not be suspended. This judgment arrives even with his repeated violations of the NFL’s hip-drop tackle regulation. This proclamation follows Luvu’s successful appeal of the call that was heard by none other than Derrick Brooks himself. The ruling means Luvu will be able to suit up for the Panthers’ next game, at the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
The NFL had originally ruled that Luvu would be suspended for one game. This punishment followed his consistent infringing of the hip-drop tackle rule, which bans players from executing that harmful tackling style. To make Shi’s full suspension worth, it would have had to cost him one game check, which is $508,333.
As a result of these violations, Luvu has been subject to large monetary damages. As a result, he was slapped with a $23,186 fine for his violation in Week 4. Later, he received a second big fine of $46,372 for the Week 8 incident. He was recently slapped with a $100,000 fine for an earlier hip-drop tackle. That would have been his third violation of that particular rule.
The Panthers’ Frankie Luvu recently broke the rule against hip-drop tackles and was the first player suspended for doing so. He was able to successfully appeal the decision, reversing the ruling. Instead, the league decided not to suspend him. This decision brings into focus the thorny questions about player behavior rules and the appeals process that surrounds them.
The hip-drop tackle rule has created quite a stir throughout the league. Its intention is admirable to limit injuries caused by dangerous and improper ways of tackling an opponent. Luvu’s case underscores the heightened scrutiny the NFL continues to operate under while trying to balance player safety with a competitive nature of the game.
This ruling allows Luvu to suit up this week against the Lions. With those swagger and ball-hawking skills, as well as his confidence, he’ll make an instant impact on his new team’s defense. As the Panthers continue to trudge through what’s become a brutal season, they’ll specifically be counting on his return on the field.
