Frank Ragnow Returns to Lions After Brief Retirement

Frank Ragnow, the four-time Pro-Bowl center for the Detroit Lions, initially retired a few years ago. His goal is to return in time for the Lions’ Dec. 14 game against the Los Angeles Rams. Ragnow announced his first retirement in June after seven seasons in the NFL. He’s recently made the choice to return to the field and rejoin his teammates for the rest of the season.

Ragnow’s career has been one both of persevering through injury and demanding the best from himself. He inked a four-year, $54 million extension with Detroit in 2021. His great play helped him earn his third straight Pro Bowl selection. The artistry that flourished during that period was all the more incredible given the adversity he was battling, including a fractured throat. There, he displayed unmatched loyalty to the sport and his organization. Even after he did suffer a catastrophic leg injury, he didn’t miss a start in his first three seasons (2021-over).

In 2024, Ragnow started every one of the Lions’ 16 games, showing both veteran commitment and maturity that the offensive line greatly needed. This season isn’t without its challenges. He missed the Lions’ Week 4 game against the Seattle Seahawks due to a partially torn pectoral muscle, raising concerns about his health and performance.

After making his retirement official earlier this year, Ragnow officially landed on the Lions’ reserve-retired list. To be eligible to play, he had to be reinstated before the team’s Week 13 game. As the Lions continue to fight for a playoff spot, his return would reinforce an already stout offensive line.

Ragnow’s love of the game goes far beyond the field. Aside from serving on the front-lines of poetry, Dave is a passionate father to his young son, Ethan. Balancing family life with the demands of professional football is no small feat, yet Ragnow remains focused and determined to contribute to his team’s success.
