Four Football Legends Inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025

On Saturday, the Pro Football Hall of Fame presented its Class of 2025. Along the way, they inducted four iconic players—Eric Allen, Jared Allen, Antonio Gates, and Sterling Sharpe—into football immortality. The induction ceremony was held in Canton, Ohio. It was an incredible achievement for each and every player who ever had a long and lasting effect on the game.

Eric Allen, the six-time Pro Bowl cornerback, was introduced by one of his four sons during the ceremony. Throughout his career, he played for the Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints, and Oakland Raiders, establishing himself as one of the premier defensive backs of his era. His influence on the field and leadership off it serve as the highest example of which all Hall of Fame members should aspire to.

Jared Allen, known as much for his all-around defensive prowess as he was his pass rushing, he was one of the most effective pass rushers of all time. He played over twelve NFL seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears, and Carolina Panthers. Over that span he tallied a jaw dropping 136 sacks and made five Pro Bowls and four All-Pro teams. His tireless chase of quarterbacks earned him the legacy as one of the top defensive ends to ever play in the league.

Antonio Gates had an impressive 16 year career as a tight end for the San Diego Chargers. He spent every one of his sixteen seasons in the NFL with the team. During his career, Gates totaled 955 receptions for 11,841 yards and 116 touchdowns. His accolades are plentiful, with eight Pro Bowl selections and three All-Pro nods. Gates’s rare ability to purposefully create mismatches in defenses turned him into an indispensable weapon for the Chargers during his long career.

Sterling Sharpe mesmerized fans with his other worldly receiving prowess as a member of the Green Bay Packers. He has averaged an impressive 85 catches and 1,162 yards per season. His career ended with 65 career touchdown receptions in seven seasons. Sharpe’s contributions to the game were amplified by a momentous familial connection: he and his brother Shannon Sharpe became the first siblings ever inducted into the Hall of Fame. Shannon Sharpe was enshrined in 2011.

During the ceremony, Sterling Sharpe expressed his deep passion for the game:

“This is why I played football.” – Sterling Sharpe

Here, inside a cavernous Ford Theatre, Washington was asked to reflect on what the honor would mean and on the journey that brought him here.

“This is why I got out of bed; it wasn’t work. It was because of this right here.” – Sterling Sharpe

He further emphasized the emotional weight of receiving a Super Bowl ring, noting its connection to love and sacrifice:

“Before I leave you, I want to do two things. The most precious gift I’ve ever received is the Super Bowl ring. … I wear this ring because of love.” – Sterling Sharpe

Antonio Gates shared insights into his journey and what motivated him throughout his career:

“Why is what makes you different; it’s your long game.” – Antonio Gates

In addition to personal stories, he articulated a broader philosophy about motivation:

“It’s the motivation that drives you to do all necessary action steps to achieve your goal. My why can be summed up in three things: fear, respect and the pursuit of greatness.” – Antonio Gates

Once past the exhibits, the induction ceremony put those individual accomplishments in impressive context. It highlighted the character and values that formed these athletes’ lives, on the field and beyond. Eric Allen invoked Al Davis’s famous phrase, “Commitment to excellence,” as he reflected on his own journey in the sport.

The Class of 2025 induction serves as a reminder of the dedication and talent required to reach such elite heights in professional football. Each player has certainly left an incredible legacy, one that inspires generations to come to achieve the same greatness in whatever they may choose to do.
