Former NFL Star Paul Flatley Passes Away at 84

Paul Flatley, a significant figure in the early years of the Minnesota Vikings, has died at the age of 84. Flatley, who was renowned for his impressive performance on the field, became the Associated Press NFL Rookie of the Year in 1963. His journey in professional football began when he was selected as the 44th overall pick by the Vikings in the fourth round of the 1963 draft.

Flatley joined the Vikings during their third season, transitioning from a halfback to a flanker at Northwestern before stepping into his role with Minnesota. Over five seasons with the team, he played in 64 games and amassed an impressive record of 202 catches for 3,222 yards and 17 touchdowns. During his debut season, Flatley played 51 games, finishing with 51 catches for 867 yards and four touchdowns.

In one memorable performance, he made five catches for 72 yards in the season opener. His consistent play throughout the season earned him a spot as the only rookie in the top 10 for receiving yards, where he ranked eighth. Flatley secured the AP honor over other notable players such as Baltimore tight end John Mackey.

"He had been an all-star quarterback and knew the passing game very well," said Flatley, reflecting on his early career under coach Norm Van Brocklin.

Beyond his playing days, Flatley served as a color commentator for the University of Minnesota football broadcast team, sharing his insights and passion for the game with fans for many years.
