In an exciting development, Delaware State University has announced the appointment of former NFL running back Clinton Portis as DeSean Jackson's running backs coach and run game coordinator. The Hornets broke the news on their social media platforms on Thursday, welcoming Portis to their coaching team. This move signifies Portis's return to football in a new capacity after a storied playing career and some personal challenges.
Portis's football journey began with a significant accolade as he was part of the University of Miami's 2001 national championship team. His prowess on the field quickly translated to the professional arena when he was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2002. During his tenure with the Denver Broncos, he rushed for an impressive 1,508 yards and 15 touchdowns, earning him two Pro Bowl selections. Over his nine-year NFL career, Portis accumulated nearly 10,000 rushing yards, with four 1,000-yard rushing seasons.
In 2004, Portis was traded to Washington, where he continued to display his remarkable skills until he was released after the 2010 season. However, his post-NFL life was marred by legal issues when he became one of 15 former NFL players who pleaded guilty to defrauding an NFL program. This program was designed to reimburse medical expenses not covered by insurance for retired players and their families. Portis admitted to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and was sentenced to six months in federal prison followed by six months of home detention.
Despite these setbacks, Portis has embraced a new chapter in his career by joining the coaching ranks at Delaware State. He follows in the footsteps of other former NFL stars who have transitioned to coaching roles at historically Black universities, such as Deion Sanders, Michael Vick, and Eddie George.
