Vontae Davis, now former NFL cornerback, had a huge impact on the game over his time in the league with the Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts. Tragically, he died at just 35 years old. On Friday, the Broward County medical examiner’s office issued an autopsy report. Instead, it showed that like in many other cases, the cause of his death remains undetermined. Davis was discovered unresponsive in his personal gym at the home that he shared with his fiancée in Southwest Ranches, Florida, on April 1, 2024.
Davis, a 2009 first-round pick of the Miami Dolphins, was an NFL offensive lineman for eight seasons. He suited up for 121 games over the course of his career, notching 22 career picks. It was his greatness on the field that paved his way to becoming a well-loved American icon. Consequently, he earned Pro Bowl honors in 2014 and 2015 over his six-year stint with the Colts.
The autopsy report disclosed several concerning findings. Brown noticed a red 1.5-inch bruise under his right eye. There was a tiny “subgaleal hemorrhage” under his right occipital bone. There was evidence of “layering of the muscles of the back,” indicating “hemorrhage in the deep muscles of the upper back.” In his case, the report found as many as 10 different substances — including amphetamines and methamphetamines — in his system.
Based on these findings, the report did not want to speculate on how Davis received his injuries. It sidestepped addressing the conditions that contributed to his premature death.
“Due to the totality of the circumstances, including inconsistencies between the scene and the findings at autopsy, the cause and manner of death in this case is best classified as undetermined,” – Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office
Vontae Davis deserved all the accolades he received for his phenomenal feats on the football field. He is perhaps best known as the younger brother of Vernon Davis, a former Pro Bowl tight end who enjoyed a tremendous NFL career. Vontae’s family has said they are devastated by his death and asked to be left alone to grieve fathomlessly for the time.
