Former NFL and MLB Draftee Dick Jauron Passes Away at 74

Dick Jauron, renowned for his dual-sport prominence and significant contributions to American football, passed away at the age of 74. A two-sport star at Yale University in the early 1970s, Jauron left an indelible mark on both football and baseball. He was selected by the Detroit Lions in the 1973 NFL Draft and simultaneously chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals in the Major League Baseball amateur draft. His athletic prowess was a testament to his versatile talents and deep-seated dedication to sports.

Jauron's professional football career commenced with the Detroit Lions, where he played as a defensive back for five seasons before joining the Cincinnati Bengals for three additional seasons. His defensive skills were unmatched, as evidenced by his 25 interceptions, with two returned for touchdowns, over a span of 100 career games with both teams. His standout performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection in 1974, solidifying his reputation as a formidable player in the league.

In 1995, Tom Coughlin hired Jauron as the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, an expansion team at the time. His success in this role led to his appointment as head coach for the Chicago Bears. Despite facing challenges, Jauron achieved a winning record in one of his five seasons with the Bears, clinching the NFC North title in 2001. His efforts that season earned him the prestigious title of AP Coach of the Year.

Throughout his coaching career, Jauron maintained friendships and professional relationships with other notable figures, such as Andy Reid, during his tenure coaching defensive backs in Green Bay. After being dismissed from the Bears in 2003, he returned to Detroit as the defensive coordinator and briefly served as interim coach in 2005. He later spent four seasons as head coach of the Buffalo Bills, although he did not secure a winning record during that period.

Jauron's passing occurred just two days following the announcement of Virginia Halas McCaskey's death. McCaskey was a prominent figure associated with the Chicago Bears, having inherited the franchise from her father and serving as its principal owner for over four decades.
