Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, former professional footballer – Guilty. He was ruled to have willfully evaded the prohibition against importing cannabis. Corner’s 34-year-old werewolf, from Cardwell Road in Gourock, Inverclyde, Scotland, pleaded guilty to the charge. He committed the crime on or about July 1–September 2, 2024. He denied those charges when called in to enter a plea back in October of 2022. Now, he’s finally agreed to strike a guilty plea.
Emmanuel-Thomas, appearing at Chelmsford Crown Court in Essex via video-link from Chelmsford Prison. On 7 September 2024, he was arrested by officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA). This came hot on the heels of the interception of nearly £600,000 of cannabis at Stansted Airport. The two suitcases loaded with about 60 kilograms of the drug were stopped during the operation.
His authorized representation, David Josse KC, acknowledged that they thought they were importing gold. He stressed that this interpretation prevailed both prior to and post the circumstances surrounding the establishment of importation. On its face, this defense raises serious issues about the circumstances of Emmanuel-Thomas’s case.
Following his arrest, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was released by Scottish Championship club Greenock Morton. Previously, he had played for several clubs including Aberdeen, Livingston, Ipswich Town, Bristol City, Queens Park Rangers, and Thai side PTT Rayong. He started his career at Arsenal, where he broke through into the first team and first made a name for himself as a hot prospect.
The court has not yet set a final sentencing date for Emmanuel-Thomas. On May 7, he admitted guilt in a new court hearing. This change represents a major pivot in a high-profile case that has captured public attention due to his former status as a professional athlete.
