Zach Wilson, the former first-round draft pick, has reached an agreement with the Miami Dolphins on a one-year contract. The deal, which is fully guaranteed, is valued at $6 million and has the potential to increase to $10 million. This move positions Wilson as a veteran backup quarterback behind the Dolphins’ starter, Tua Tagovailoa.
Wilson's professional journey has been eventful. Initially drafted in the first round, he started his career by playing 36 games over two years with Pittsburgh. In 2024, however, Wilson's season was cut short after just four games due to an Achilles injury. Despite his early promise, Wilson has struggled with a challenging 12-21 record as a starter. He has thrown more interceptions than touchdown passes and completed only 57% of his passes. These statistics placed him 35th out of 36 qualified passers in QBR rankings, with a score of 33.6 over his three-year career.
Earlier this year, Wilson was traded from the New York Jets to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a sixth-round pick and a seventh-rounder. His tenure with the Broncos saw him in fierce competition for the starting quarterback position alongside rookie Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham during Denver's offseason program and early training camp. Despite not securing the starting role, Wilson played an instrumental role in Nix's development as a rookie.
"You put a guy in position to make a lot of money," Sean Payton commented, acknowledging Wilson's influence on Nix’s growth.
The Miami Dolphins' decision to sign Wilson underscores their need for a reliable and experienced backup for Tagovailoa. With Wilson's proven capabilities and experience, the Dolphins aim to strengthen their quarterback lineup.
