Phil Foden proved to be lethal once again in the attack. He netted his remarkable sixth goal in only four Premier League appearances in Manchester City’s 3-0 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. It’s safe to say that goal came from pure quality — a beautiful, curving effort into the top corner, giving Palace keeper Dean Henderson no chance. These displays brought Manchester City within two points of joint league leaders Arsenal. They are out to win that title tooth and nail!
Despite Foden’s goal, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed dissatisfaction with the 25-year-old’s overall performance. Guardiola praised Foden for his impact on the scoreline, but expressed the opinion that there was something more to be desired in his overall game. He emphasized this point after the match, stating, “Phil today, and I know the people may think differently, was not good.”
Guardiola’s comments served to underline just how much room is left for Foden to progress in learning to read the game more. Even with an excellent display out of possession, Foden’s performance in possession showed that the bright young player still has room to improve.
“He has a lot of margin to understand the game,” – Pep Guardiola
Aside from his goal-scoring ability, Guardiola was full of praise for Foden’s defensive work-rate in the match. It was the manner in which Foden pressed and contributed to his side’s defensive efforts that specifically impressed the manager, labelling his work “unbelievable” and “incredible.” In that match, Foden showcased his incredible potential as a playmaker. In addition to being an example of a strong player, he helps the team focus on improving defensive tactics.
Foden’s big-match performance drew eyes to the pitch, and for good reason as England manager Thomas Tuchel was reportedly in attendance to watch the game. The observing England coach will have been impressed by what he saw of Foden’s skill and promise as he continues to be readied for the demands of international football.
At full time, Guardiola was spotted having a fascinating chat with Foden. He left the pitch with his arm around the player’s shoulder. This simple act demonstrated Guardiola’s faith in nurturing Foden’s growth, while recognizing the aspects of his game that he still needs to work on.
