Florida A&M University (FAMU) is poised to deliver some of the biggest news the NCAA Division I men’s basketball program has ever seen. Charlie Ward, the 1993 Heisman Trophy winner from Florida State University, is taking a huge leap. He’s in the process of finalizing a deal to become their new head coach. At 54 years old, Ward has an impressive background in experience both on and off the court. His expertise on the subject has made him one of the most high-profile figures in the field.
Ward’s illustrious career started in college football, where he became a household name as a signal-caller at Florida State. His record smashing performance helped him win college football’s top prize, the Heisman Trophy, while turning him into a national sensation. Ward took that jump into professional basketball and came to the NBA in 1994. He continued playing until 2005, mostly with the New York Knicks but taking chances with the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. His time in the league did give him invaluable experience and perspective on what makes a successful competitor at the highest level.
After his years on the field, Ward moved to the other side of the game as a coach. He went on to be an assistant coach for the Houston Rockets in the 2005-06 to 2006-07 season. On top of that, he’s developed himself through the lens of a high school head coach in Tallahassee and as a member of the USA Basketball program. This impressive pedigree as a coach makes him uniquely qualified for the challenges that lie ahead at FAMU.
The newly elected FAMU school board is already planning a meeting to finalize Ward’s contract. This is just the start of his official ascendance to a difficult job. His men’s basketball program has failed to put a team in the NCAA tournament since 2007. They have not had a winning season since 2006-07. Ward’s hiring by Phillips is expected to be a key move in revitalizing the troubled program and returning it to a competitive posture.
Ward is one of the highest-profile coaches in the nation’s HBCU men’s programs. His status can help draw more attention, support and resources to FAMU’s basketball pursuits. His connection to the community and previous success in various capacities makes him a strong candidate to bring change to the program.
