Flacco Takes the Helm as Browns’ Starting Quarterback at 40

Flacco Takes the Helm as Browns’ Starting Quarterback at 40

The Cleveland Browns announced today that they’ve signed Joe Flacco to start. He’ll be under center for the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 7th. This decision is good news and a big relief for Flacco, who is entering his 18th NFL season and turned 40 in January. His appointment as the starter is a testament to his remarkable toughness. It puts him in invaluable company — an elite class of NFL quarterbacks who have ever started games at 40+ years old.

Flacco officially became the starter after a tight training camp. His rookie year really felt like nobody could come close to touching him, particularly as other quarterbacks succumbed to injuries. Head Coach Kevin Stefanski emphasized Flacco’s performance during practices and joint sessions, stating, “Joe performed really well both in practice, in the joint practices, in the meeting room, you name it, in the walkthrough, just what he’s able to bring to the football team. He’s earned that role.”

This will mark Flacco’s first start in an opening week since he was the Jets starter in 2022. His high level of experience in the league glows resplendently. Those past victories should inspire him as he takes the Browns onto the field for another season opener.

Still, Flacco didn’t downplay how much being named the starter means, saying it was “definitely special.” He remained composed regarding his achievement. He looked back on how important it was for him to seize opportunities when they came within the league, knowing that sometimes each opportunity is short-lived.

As Flacco himself gets ready for this season, the strides he’s made have been nothing short of impressive. After suffering the injury on July 26, he made his return to full participation in 11-on-11 drills on August 19. Only with the injury-free liberty afforded, first-team reps have mostly gone his way in training camp. This build season experience only adds to his increasing preparedness and readiness for the upcoming season.

Flacco would be the 18th quarterback in NFL history to start a game after his 40th birthday. He’ll take his place among the likes of storied greats such as Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Brett Favre. This achievement not only underscores Flacco’s longevity in a physically demanding sport but sets a precedent for future quarterbacks.

Flacco remained pretty down to earth about how he would fit within the team. He stated that he is “not so concerned about the depth chart, honestly,” indicating his focus remains on contributing to the team’s success rather than individual accolades.

With the season opener just a few days away, expect increased security measures. Flacco’s leadership will be imperative to the Browns hopes of coming out of the gate strong against their division foes. The team still hasn’t named a backup quarterback for this game. This uncertainty invites speculation even further with regards to who will share the field with Flacco.
