Favre’s Defamation Lawsuit Against Auditor Advances

Brett Favre, the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback and Mississippi native. He is wrangling with Mississippi State Auditor Shad White in a defamation lawsuit—one that he himself filed in 2023. The lawsuit is a result of White’s allegations that Favre diverted Mississippi taxpayers’ money. The case has gained significant media attention, particularly following the release of White’s 2024 book, “Mississippi Swindle: Brett Favre and the Welfare Scandal that Shocked America.”

Favre’s lawsuit makes it clear that White was wrong to accuse Favre of dilapidating taxpayer money meant for welfare services as well. The scandal, which has attracted national attention, centers on accusations that more than $1 million in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds were misspent. These funds were purportedly used to construct a $5 million volleyball complex at the University of Southern Mississippi, Brett Favre’s alma mater. Although Favre has repaid $1.1 million, White argues that he owes approximately $730,000 because interest has accrued over time.

Favre continues to strongly and unequivocally deny all allegations that he has done anything unlawful or improper. He has yet to be criminally charged for his role in the scandal. He is one of over thirty individuals that the state is suing, in a monumental legal battle. This move is a piece of a larger attempt to reclaim misguided welfare dollars from the TANF program.

The two trials have shone a light on the larger issues at play involving public officials. Further, according to White’s office, they were concerned that continued litigation would put First Amendment rights at risk. They worry it will further chill public servants from simply doing their jobs.

“The continued litigation of this case not only threatens important First Amendment rights. Equally if not more worrisomely, it discourages public servants from doing their jobs.” – Shad White’s appeal

In response to Favre’s lawsuit, White’s office stated, “The facts of this case have not changed and Auditor White will continue to defend himself from this ridiculous and frivolous lawsuit.”

The legal drama took a huge turn earlier this month, when Mississippi’s Supreme Court ruled against White’s motion to dismiss Favre’s lawsuit. Accordingly, the defamation action will now proceed to trial where both sides will have an opportunity to argue their case.
