The Atlanta Falcons have bolstered their defensive lineup by signing veteran pass rusher Leonard Floyd to a one-year, $10 million contract. This development comes as the team aims to improve its pass rush capabilities, which have been a significant concern. Floyd reunites with Falcons head coach Raheem Morris, with whom he previously worked during Morris's tenure as defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams. The move marks a strategic step for the Falcons, especially after releasing hometown player Grady Jarrett earlier this week.
Leonard Floyd arrives in Atlanta with an impressive NFL track record. He was instrumental in the Los Angeles Rams' successful 2021 campaign, contributing significantly to their Super Bowl LVI victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. During that game, Floyd recorded one of the Rams' seven sacks against Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, highlighting his prowess on the field. His performance history is consistent; since 2020, he has achieved at least 8.5 sacks each season.
In the previous season, Floyd played for the San Francisco 49ers under a two-year, $20 million deal. He managed to secure 8.5 sacks, finishing just behind teammate Nick Bosa, who led the team with nine. Although his tenure with the 49ers was brief, it underscored his ability to remain a formidable presence in defense. The Falcons have struggled in this area, placing second to last in the league for both sacks and quarterback pressure percentage at 28.1% last season. Floyd's addition addresses this critical gap.
The Falcons have not seen a player achieve as many sacks as Floyd's recent performance since Adrian Clayborn in 2017. This offseason, enhancing their pass rush was a top priority, making Floyd's signing a well-timed and strategic acquisition. A Georgia native and former University of Georgia player, Floyd brings not only his skills but also a local connection to the team.
Floyd is expected to compete for a starting position alongside Kaden Elliss. He will likely vie with inside linebacker Troy Andersen for a spot, bringing depth and experience to the Falcons' defense. Selected ninth overall by the Chicago Bears in the 2016 draft, Floyd has amassed 66.5 sacks over his nine-season NFL career, demonstrating both longevity and effectiveness as a defensive end.
