Falcons’ Elijah Wilkinson Steps Up Amid Offensive Line Changes

The Atlanta Falcons had a lot working against them this season. What reunited them was a startling stability on their offensive line, a lot due to Elijah Wilkinson. Kaleb McGary’s injury allowed Wilkinson to step in and become the starting right tackle in week one. This decision raised eyebrows among past and present fans and analysts. As the season progresses, Wilkinson has proven to be a reliable protector for left-handed quarterback Michael Penix Jr., demonstrating commendable performance on the field.

Wilkinson takes on this influential role following an extraordinary career. He made 19 starts at right tackle over 2019 and 2020 with the Denver Broncos, then tacked on nine starts at left guard in 2022. It’s shown through how the veteran translates his experience into effective play. He helps lead the way of an offensive line that is currently ranked seventh in the league for pass block win rate at 65 percent. The Falcons are 32nd in run blocking efficiency, and the Falcons rank 28th in run blocking win rate at 68 percent. Pass protection has consistently been their most impressive trait.

>Chris Lindstrom, a three-time Pro Bowl right guard, sounded reassured when asked about Wilkinson’s potential. He acknowledged the initial doubts surrounding the team’s adjustment, stating, “When people were questioning and alarmed and like, hey, obviously we understood that missing Kaleb was a big thing, but internally we had a ton of confidence in Elijah.” Lindstrom further praised Wilkinson’s performance: “And so, for him to go out and perform the way he has and to continue that throughout the season, it is awesome for him.”

Wilkinson did all of that, and Ryan Neuzil made his case as one of the main players. On the year, he ranks eighth in pass block win rate among centers at 4.2% and ranks 11th among all interior offensive linemen at 95%. Combined with a suddenly dominant offensive line, it’s the perfect recipe for an explosive, rolling Falcons’ offense. Standout rookie Bijan Robinson puts on his wizard cape and ranks fourth in the league in yards from scrimmage.

That camaraderie within the offensive line is as real as it gets, confirmed Zac Robinson. He remarked on the strong connection among teammates both on and off the field: “Those guys are so connected, and whether they’re in the classroom or out on the field, you feel how close that group is and it all starts with Coach Ledford.” Robinson further highlighted Wilkinson’s skills: “He does an unbelievable job handling fundamentals, techniques, all the things that we’re looking for in the run game and pass game, but then just bringing the group together.”

Beyond the field, Wilkinson’s family life is a testament to his roots as a family man and community leader. Just last week, he quipped on social media about catching his wife Gabrielle scrolling through her phone reading posts about him. In a candid exchange, he teased her to put her phone away. This simple, yet mischievous act expressed his down to earth character, even while dealing with the high stakes of pro football.

In a separate but related event, Bijan Robinson joined Rich Eisen for dinner—a weekly tradition they share every Thursday night. During their meal, Robinson offered advice to Texas quarterback Arch Manning, reflecting his commitment to mentorship and leadership both on and off the field.

Elijah Wilkinson’s journey this season has not only stabilized the Falcons’ offensive line but exemplified resilience and adaptability in overcoming challenges. What drives Wilkinson is that teammates like Lindstrom and Neuzil are standing behind her. With his own willpower as his engine, he is well on his way to cementing his position in Atlanta’s overall offensive game plan.
