The day started with Europe requiring just two points from the 12 singles matches to win the championship. The winning side with the commanding lead of 11.5-4.5 after Saturday’s play. This remarkable showing paved the way for a nail-biting conclusion – and finish.…and there played a central role in their success. He then went on to defeat fellow American Patrick Cantlay 2-and-1, closing Europe in fraud on to their nefarious final purpose.
Shane Lowry’s performance was particularly noteworthy. He rolled in a 6-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to earn a full point with his victory over Russell Henley. Lowry expressed the emotional weight of the competition, stating, “That was the hardest couple hours of my life. Honestly. I just can’t believe it. I can’t believe that putt went in. … The Ryder Cup means everything to me.”
Even though Scottie Scheffler beat Rory McIlroy, 1-up, Team USA was still in trouble as Europe never lost the match. The score suddenly swelled to 12-5 after Viktor Hovland had to withdraw with a neck injury. His quarterfinal match against Harris English was ruled a tie.
Cameron Young and Justin Thomas both made significant contributions to their team’s efforts by converting birdie putts on No. 18, but it was not enough to overcome Europe’s lead. By the end of the day, that Ludvig Åberg win had brought Europe to within a half point of winning the Cup, with Europe establishing their lead as champions.
While Scottie Scheffler remained winless through the first four sessions, his performance against McIlroy marked a critical moment for the American team. It was Team Europe’s better strategy and execution over the course of the tournament that really won them the day.
