Essex has announced the signing of Indian fast bowler Shardul Thakur for the first seven matches of this season's County Championship. The 33-year-old cricketer, who has played 83 times for India, brings a wealth of experience from both international and domestic cricket. Thakur will debut for Essex in the opening Championship match against Surrey at Chelmsford on April 4.
Thakur, renowned for his dual skillset, has taken 296 wickets in his first-class career with an impressive average of 27.26. Moreover, he is a competent lower-order batter, having scored two centuries and 15 half-centuries. His stint with Essex will see him participating in matches against Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire in April, followed by games in May against Somerset and Yorkshire. He will also play at Worcestershire's New Road and Surrey's The Kia Oval.
Essex's returning director of cricket, Chris Silverwood, expressed excitement over the deal with Thakur, emphasizing the club's eagerness to have him on board. Thakur himself conveyed his enthusiasm about joining Essex and participating in county cricket, a dream he has long cherished.
"I am feeling excited to join Essex this summer," said Shardul Thakur in a statement on the club's website.
His experience is not limited to international formats; Thakur has won the Indian Premier League twice with Chennai Super Kings. This success underscores his capability to perform under pressure and adapt to various playing conditions.
"Personally it brings new challenges and opportunities to showcase my talent and skills," added Shardul Thakur.
Thakur's upcoming matches promise a showcase of his ability to both claim wickets and contribute valuable runs. His presence is expected to bolster Essex's performance significantly as they seek to make an impact at the beginning of the Championship.
"County cricket is something I always wanted to experience and I am glad that I'll be representing the Eagles," remarked Shardul Thakur.
