The Coral Gables Fire Department received the call about the fire at approximately 4:36 a.m. More than 20 fire units responded to the scene to fight the fire. Eyewitness testimonials validated that plumes of smoke were issuing from the property. This went on for over three hours after the first fire trucks arrived. The incident was determined to be contained at approximately the same time, a sign that firefighters had made great strides in controlling the complex incident.
The night before that horrible incident, Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra and his team would finish playing a game against the Denver Nuggets. The Miami Heat’s charter flight landed back in Miami at 5:11 a.m., just minutes after the firefighting efforts began. Spoelstra found his way home on the heels of landing at the airport. To his surprise, as he got deeper into the smoke he found multiple fire crews already fighting the fire.
Investigators from multiple agencies are actively working to determine the cause of the fire. Fortunately so far, no injuries resulting from the crash have been reported.
