Eoin Morgan, the former captain of the England men’s cricket team, is taking on an exciting new role with the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). He will take over now as the new chair of cricket. This appointment comes on the heels of Claire Taylor’s decision to resign from her post at the end of September. Morgan will assume his new responsibilities full-time October 1. He will be appointed for an initial three year term, which may be renewed for a further three years.
The MCC, located at Lord’s, is the custodian and arbiter of cricket’s laws and spirit. Mark Nicholas is serving as chair of its principal committee. In addition to Nicholas, the organization’s chief executive and secretary, Rob Lawson, and its president, Lord King, are all-time greats. The committee plays a pivotal role in carrying out the club’s mission. Last week, they took a fateful step in the right direction by selling a 49% share in London Spirit to a consortium of tech billionaires.
Morgan’s leadership on the cricket field culminated in England’s historic victory in the 2019 50-over World Cup. His experience and insight are expected to significantly benefit the MCC as it navigates current challenges and opportunities within the sport.
In addition to a ceremonial role, Morgan is responsible for directing the MCC on various cricketing initiatives and policies. His appointment is anticipated to reinforce the club’s commitment to enhancing cricket at all levels, ensuring it remains relevant and engaging for future generations.
In addition to Morgan’s appointment, Julian Metherell has been recommended to join the MCC’s main committee. Metherell played a vital role in leading the MCC’s negotiating team during the sale of the stake in London Spirit, demonstrating his commitment to the club’s strategic objectives.
The MCC’s annual general meeting is on May 7, where members will formally approve Morgan’s appointment. This meeting will focus on several other major developments which are equally shaping the club’s future direction.
