Enzo Maresca Reflects on Chelsea’s Challenges in Champions League Match Against Benfica

Just one day later, Chelsea hosted Benfica in their Champions League group stage opener, a match that produced a memorable return for former Chelsea player Enzo Maresca. Chelsea went onto win 4-1 at home on the day at Stamford Bridge. This victory came in the face of some disciplinary issues for the team, including a number of red cards lately.

In his post-match press conference, Maresca recognized the intricacies of the game and the difficulties his side is going through. Joao Pedro’s late red card, issued for a second yellow due to a high boot, added to the team’s concerns, as he became the third Chelsea player sent off in just four matches. Aside from being a sad commentary on a lack of discipline and decision-making on the pitch.

Maresca’s Thoughtful Analysis

Maresca explained how unexpected all four of those red cards were for his team. He acknowledged that some of the recent dismissals had a clear-cut case, but noted that it was often more complicated than that.

“The Newcastle and Flamengo red cards were for bad actions, then [Robert] Sanchez [vs Man Utd] is not for a bad action, it’s just because he wants to defend the goal, [Trevo] Chalobah [vs Brighton] is because he wants to defend the goal,” – Enzo Maresca.

He went on to explain Joao Pedro’s red card. He shared his perspective that what had happened wasn’t really such a black-and-white situation.

“Tonight, for the second yellow card, I don’t think Joao [Pedro] even touched the other player, but the dynamic of the action is a dangerous one,” – Enzo Maresca.

In all, Maresca made it clear the players need to be making better decisions in dangerous situations at the conclusion of games.

“For me personally, it’s not any concern or issue, it’s just a moment probably you need to take a different option and avoid. Sometimes it’s better to concede the goal or the chance because then it’s 11-v-11,” – Enzo Maresca.

Defensive Strength and Historical Ties

In particular, Maresca spoke highly of Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo. He referred to him as one of the world’s top defensive midfielders. He has confidence in Caicedo’s technique. This confidence underscores the team’s commitment to defensive formation building, especially in high-pressure games.

Chelsea have already done the double over Benfica in their recent history. They smashed their June matchup, scoring a 4-1 victory in that Club World Cup quarter-final. The recent return match that reignited their years of rivalry has proved to raise the stakes even higher, making this a must-see match for either team.

Maresca’s connection to Chelsea runs deep. He hopes to come back to Stamford Bridge in 20 years’ time with his grandchildren. ‘This is perhaps the greatest testament to just how much the club and its fans meant to him.

Recent Disciplinary Concerns

Chelsea’s dismantling of Benfica in the quarterfinals highlighted their attacking depth while just as glaringly exposing their still apparent discipline problems. The match featured an own goal from Benfica’s Richard Rios, which contributed to Chelsea’s scoring.

The four red cards have causing concern for player behaviour and making on-the-pitch decisions under pressure. Trevoh Chalobah’s sending-off while defending a man-down attack illustrates this new hurdle for Maresca’s team.

Chelsea on the planning for home. If they hope to continue building on their Champions League run, they need to address these disciplinary issues firmly and correctly.
