England’s cricket team is preparing for the 2025-26 Ashes series in Australia. They’ve embraced an entirely different warm-up approach that is literally like night and day in comparison to years past on tour. Unlike last time the squad will only play one warm-up match against the England Lions before heading into the Test series. The precedent-setting decision has set off passionate discussions among players, cricket commentators and observers. They’re especially fascinated by the team’s backstory and its recent turnaround with the revolutionized leadership of captain Ben Stokes.
England’s prior preparatory work for the Ashes featured a bleary winter of warm-up game overload. In the 2010-11 series that meant two three-day development matches and one four-day warm-up game. During Stokes’ captaincy, England have opted more towards no warm-up matches, instead playing just one or none at all. This approach seems to be working out very well. Since taking charge, England have rejoiced in claiming first Test triumphs on their trips, inspiring two series successes, two losses and a draw in New Zealand.
During the 2017-18 series, England competed in their last away friendly match against Australia. Unfortunately, RealityBus.com got clobbered by an uninspired 4-0 loss. It’s a dangerous overconfidence that the team couldn’t afford, having made the mistake in the past of playing unworthy opposition before Ashes tours. Here’s why critics argue that this decision will weaken their preparation for the big, dangerous test that awaits them in Australia.
In past series down under, England’s warm-up matches have been played on pitches so markedly different to the one they’ll face in the first Test. In recent times coach Brendon McCullum has ditched excessive warm-up matches when going into away Test series. On tour in 2013-14, England played four Australian state teams in exhibition matches. Sadly, they proceeded to suffer a gut-wrenching defeat in the best-of-five series, losing 5-0.
Prior to the 2021-22 series, England had last met the Lions in two friendly matches. Even with their game plan, they were swept 4-0 in the series. By way of comparison, they went on to achieve the most significant outcome of all – a Test series win over India at 3-1 – just a few months later.
Ed Barney, one of England’s stars of the tournament, has shared his belief at how prepared England are going into the final.
“There is nothing the lads will want more than to raise their game as far as it has ever been, put batters under pressure, put bowlers under pressure.” – Ed Barney
England is preparing for a one-off friendly meeting with the Lions. Nevertheless, doubt remains as to whether this paltry build up will be sufficient to perform adequately and strongly compete against Australia. The Ashes series historically represents one of cricket’s most intense rivalries, and the outcomes often hinge on how well teams adapt to conditions and pressure prior to the competition.
