There was a palpable belief from England’s batting coach, Marcus Trescothick, that they would get the job done, when speaking to TMS. He emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and managing pressure, stating, “We would have loved 250 and beyond but we would have taken 190 and our chance to bowl on that pitch and it’ll come down to who holds the pressure best.”

It was a chaotic first Test match but in their first innings, England’s batting took shape as they scored 387 runs. Joe Root was the leader of that response, scoring a brilliant 104. He was well supported by Tom Carse, who made 56, and Jamie Smith with 51. India’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, managed to take 5 wickets for 74 runs, effectively limiting England’s scoring opportunities.

To everybody’s surprise, India matched England’s first-innings score of 387 runs in their own first innings. KL Rahul was the main performer for India as he hammered a big century, scoring 100 runs off just 63 balls. Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja both played impactful innings, scoring 74 and 72 runs, respectively. England’s Chris Woakes was his side’s most effective bowler, taking 3 for 84.

As the match moved into the second innings, England found it increasingly difficult to chase down the target. They set a daunting target, getting all out for a whopping 192 runs. Joe Root showed his class yet again with a steely performance to score 40 runs. Harry Brook succumbed to seamer Akash Deep trying to sweep a bouncer that reared up on him for only 23.

Washington Sundar emerged as a key player for India during the second innings, taking four crucial wickets for just 22 runs. Sundar’s bowling was key to building pressure on England’s batting unit, forcing them to fall into the trap of taking risks.

The final was tipped on its head when Akash Deep had Ben Stokes caught and bowled. With that wickett, India took complete control, finishing the 4th day at 58-4. From then on, the Indian bowlers never let the Australians gain a clear grip on the match. As ever, Root and Stokes counterattacked superbly, doing their best to get England back on track.

As Washington Sundar admitted in his post-match chat with TMS, this was an intensely competitive game. He remarked, “We’d have loved to have about nine wickets [in hand]. It is what it is and we’ll definitely win the game.” CRICDON This remark goes a long way to illustrate his confidence in India’s bowling attack and the promise of a nice exciting close finish.

The concluding moments of the day saw Jofra Archer successfully removing Yashasvi Jaiswal, further tightening India’s hold on the match. Even as both teams got ready for the climactic final day, the excitement didn’t stop there, with fans not giving up on their hopes for a thrilling finish.

Commenting on the intensity of the match, TMS commentator Jonathan Agnew noted, “We’re all a bit hoarse after that. It was absolutely gripping. Even World Cup finals don’t quite generate that kind of madness.” This line goes a long way to capturing the buzz around this hotly contested, thrilling Test.

Both organizations are obviously preparing for the last day of action. England now need to see down a target of 135 runs, India look to take victory and level the series at 2-1.
