The 2023 T20 world champions, the England Women’s Cricket Team further exhibited their supremacy at the FCG in Leicester. They went on to beat the West Indies convincingly in the second ODI, winning the 5 match series 3-0. England were set a challenging target of 367 runs to win. They went on to make 201 runs without losing a single wicket, reaching their victory target in only 29 overs—a women’s ODI cricket first. Notably, this victory is the first time England’s women’s side has passed 400 runs in this format.
Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones lead off for Team England, both scoring 100s and demonstrating incredible teamwork. Their onslaught jointly birthed a breathtaking consecutive 200-run opening partnership. This accomplishment only adds to their legacy as the most dangerous opening pair. It was Beaumont’s remarkable century, which opened the tournament, that stole the show. Meanwhile, Jones’s assertive batting was electric and integral in putting together a strong start to the team’s innings.
Jannillea Glasgow had a standout game with the bat, scoring an impressive 44 runs. Emma Lamb’s wonderful knock bolstered the batting order. England used to make scores like 400 runs. This extraordinary achievement was not just a record; it highlighted the incredible prowess exhibited by them in women’s cricket.
Nat Sciver-Brunt, the captain of the England Women’s Cricket Team, expressed confidence in her squad’s abilities. That emphatic win against the West Indies now serves as a reminder of their phenomenal depth of talent. Particularly impressive, though, has been the spin bowling unit, anchored by powerhouses Lauren Filer and Sophie Ecclestone.
We’ve been anxiously awaiting updates from the medical team. Everyone else is fully fit and ready. It’s nothing big with Hayley,” said Sciver-Brunt, discussing team chemistry and fitness in light of their semifinal match against the West Indies.
Amy Jones touching on her partnership with Beaumont, and how they aim to build on their excellent partnership at the top of the order.
“It’s quite funny how it’s worked out, after a good number of games. I loved today, it’s been cool to be in a big partnership with Tammy Beaumont.” – Amy Jones
She recognised the challenge of opening the batting, stressing the need to ride your luck at key times.
“Opening’s not that easy, you have to ride your luck. I did that today. I’m surprised Tammy didn’t know that [the consecutive partnerships record], she’s a bit of a statto. I’m pleased to pile the runs on with Tam.” – Amy Jones
Jones does a great job remaining calm and poised at the crease. Meanwhile, she often reveals her uncontrived game, which is unsurprisingly the hallmark of her performance.
“I’m trying to stay nice and still at the crease and react to what’s coming down. I’ve got a lot of confidence and backing in the group and feel I can go out and express myself.” – Amy Jones
Speaking after the match, West Indies captain Shemaine Campbelle recognized the defeat. She admitted that her players failed to implement their detailed game plan against a strong England team that was ready to play.
“It’s good to see the young players going out there playing today and playing a positive brand of cricket, that was a plus for us. Going into it, we wanted to bowl into good areas. We struggled to do that and unfortunately it didn’t go the way that we wanted.” – Shemaine Campbelle
The England Women’s Cricket Team were victorious, winning the T20 series against the West Indies. This victory creates the possibility of even more excitement leading up to their thrilling match-up with India, one of the greatest teams in women’s cricket now. After their phenomenal showing at the T20 World Cup, England will be hoping to take this positivity into the upcoming Ashes series.
