Under new leader Thomas Tuchel’s tutelage, the squad utterly dominated the match. They did it while shoring up their own borders and neutralizing Latvia’s every attempt to pose a challenge. England’s qualification is significant, especially considering they had previously faced only one opponent ranked within FIFA’s top 40 during Tuchel’s tenure.

A Quick Start and Strategic Counterattack

Set the tone right away right away, England really showed who came to play during the opening match. Tottenham’s Harry Kane came close to finding the net less than a minute into the match. He did manage to find the back of the net, but was flagged for offside on the play. Yet still, the Three Lions kept their heads up and waited for a chance to hit back.

The turning point was when England took advantage of Latvia’s first real foray forward with a quick counterattack. Their clever quick corner routine set up their opening goal. This displayed their incisiveness to find the gaps in the opposing team’s backline. Anthony Gordon, who has been making waves on the international stage, scored his second goal for England, adding to the team’s tally and boosting their confidence.

Kane proved his class with two goals in just a few minutes. With those goals, he raised his international tally to 76. The rabid goal-scorer has scored seven goals in seven matches during Tuchel’s tutelage so far. His performances were key in helping England to an emphatic early lead.

“I’d say so, the numbers are there but the way I’m feeling on the pitch, the way I’m seeing passes, the runs, physically I’m in a good place.” – Harry Kane

Maintaining Pressure and Team Cohesion

And, after scoring the opening goal, England pressed high and kept Latvia under constant pressure. They continued doing so all the way to the end line. That was a testament to the exceptional fitness and relentless drive of her runners. “We’re dominant in games, we’re hungry. We invest against the ball, we get a lot of ball wins in the opposing half.” – Thomas Tuchel

Their camaraderie and sense of team unity could be felt in their play. Players moved and passed with purpose, pouring on chance after chance but stifling Latvia’s ability to counter immediately. In the dying moments, Eberechi Eze got his second, and England’s 20th, closing in on a remarkable competition. This objective completely established their prominence in the qualification round lopsided match.

Tuchel was delighted with his squad’s display, calling it a reward for their diligence and dedication during their season.
