England's cricket team is set to face India in a highly anticipated T20 series, commencing this Wednesday in Kolkata. The series marks a significant moment as Ben Duckett returns to the opening partnership, a strategy England last employed during the ODI series against Australia in September. This move offers a fresh dynamic as Duckett, typically a Test opener, steps into the T20 opening role for the first time in six years.
India, currently holding the title of T20 world champions, will present a formidable challenge. However, England has responded by naming a youthful squad, infused with both promising talent and seasoned experience. Phil Salt will continue his duties behind the stumps, while Jos Buttler will lead the team on the field. Notably, Gus Atkinson joins the squad for his first white-ball matches since 2023, following an impressive debut year in Test cricket where he captured 52 wickets in 11 matches during 2024.
Brendon McCullum, newly appointed as England's white-ball coach, brings a wealth of experience to the table. His appointment comes as England begins preparations for the upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan next month. Despite some notable absences—Jamie Smith, Brydon Carse, Saqib Mahmood, and Rehan Ahmed have been left out of the squad—the team remains confident in its lineup.
"It is not a new set up because Baz has been around for a while and there are a lot of players in this squad that have been with him the Test set up," said Jos Buttler.
Mark Wood will make his first appearance since August, adding depth to England's bowling attack. Additionally, Jacob Bethell retains his place in the team after a breakthrough winter. Bethell's performance was impressive on his debut tour of the West Indies, where he scored fifties in each of his first three Tests in New Zealand.
"He has a good head on his shoulders and has the game for it," remarked Jos Buttler.
India faces its own challenges as Jasprit Bumrah will miss the series due to injury. Despite this setback, the Indian team remains a formidable opponent, especially on home turf. However, England's strategic changes and youthful energy promise an exciting and competitive series.
"I am looking forward to building that relationship. It is going to be a great series against a really top side in their own conditions," Jos Buttler added.
