England Announces T20 World Cup and ODI Squads for Sri Lanka Tour

England’s cricket selectors have just announced the squads for their imminent tour of Sri Lanka. The tour includes three one-day internationals (ODIs) and three T20 matches, including selection of the ODI squad and the T20 World Cup roster. For England, the tournament will start on 8 February in Mumbai against Nepal.

The T20 World Cup squad has seasoned players mixed with new blood. There is Jofra Archer, included in the squad despite having played none of the final two Ashes Tests. Concerns about his fitness immediately came to mind. The team includes Harry Brook, Rehan Ahmed, Tom Banton and Jacob Bethell alongside Archer. It features Jos Buttler, Brydon Carse (Sri Lanka tour only), Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Josh Tongue and Luke Wood.

England’s ODI team would look very similar to the T20 squad. Most surprisingly, Zak Crawley makes his way into the squad having played just eight ODIs and having not featured since December 2023. The team is loaded, especially on the offensive side. It features Harry Brook, Rehan Ahmed, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Brydon Carse, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Joe Root and Luke Wood.

Ashes hero Josh Tongue has sealed his place in the T20 World Cup squad after some impressive displays during the Ashes series. He had a phenomenal run taking 12 wickets within two Tests! His emphatic performance with the white ball has given him a legitimate shout to be one of the English pace options come World Cup time.

A lot of people are scratching their heads at Joe Root’s inclusion in the ODI series. There was even a hope that he would take a breather after the 03-04 Ashes War. Root’s experience will be vital as England seeks to secure automatic qualification for the 50-over World Cup in 2027 through these ODIs.
