Versatile lineman Elgton Jenkins of the Green Bay Packers takes a bow during the 2020 post-season awards. He’s opted out of his team’s voluntary offseason workouts while he continues negotiating a new contract with them. Back in 2019 Jenkins was drafted early in the second round. He has turned into an unsung hero, as he has played every spot on the offensive line. He is currently signed to a lucrative contract that lasts through the 2026 season. If he makes all of his incentives this year, he’s scheduled to earn $12.8 million.
Jenkins agreed to a four-year, $68 million extension in December 2022. The contract reaffirms his worth as an offensive guard but shows the love he’s being shown to be a potential offensive tackle. He has a remaining contract balance of roughly $32.8 million. The guaranteed figure to date is a signing bonus of $24 million. In 2026, Jenkins will be turning 30 years old. He’s going to be making $20 million, which could put him at or near the top of the league’s centers in average salary if that $17 million salary becomes Cleveland’s reality.
As Jenkins has already missed most of the offseason program. This means he will lose out on the $500,000 workout bonus. That absence has made his future earnings, and potential changes to his contract, a question mark. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst admitted earlier this offseason that Jenkins has been vocal about wanting to feel safe about his money.
Head coach Matt LaFleur has confidence that Jenkins can transition to center on a full-time basis. Meanwhile, offensive line coach Adam Stenavich is on board with that too. Stenavich shared that Jenkins’ experience and enthusiasm for this change were contagious.
“The conversations that we’ve had with him, yeah, he’s got a lot of experience there and he was open to it, excited about it. So, ready to go.”
Jenkins’ ability to play all five positions on the offensive line is another testament to his importance to the team. His $8.85M AAV on his current deal is elite tackle money, but more than a guard would make as well. Negotiations will focus on getting more guaranteed money for the rest of his contract.
The Packers are deep into their offseason program. Jenkins’ decision to stop participating in workouts raises legitimate concerns over his dedication and long-term plans with the Seahawks. The outcome of these negotiations could significantly impact not only Jenkins’ career but the overall dynamics of the Packers’ offensive line.
