The Philadelphia Eagles are preparing to rest several key starters, including quarterback Jalen Hurts, for their regular-season finale against the Washington Commanders this Sunday. With Hurts out, Tanner McKee will have control under center as the starting quarterback. The former sixth-round choice from Stanford, taken in this year’s NFL Draft, isn’t intimidated by the prospect. The Eagles currently hold the No. 3 seed in the NFC and aim to secure a victory while prioritizing player health.
Head coach Nick Sirianni still has not shown his hand on the Eagles’ starting lineup. He added that the team is “getting close” to making a call on the QB battle. Such a victory would thrust the Eagles into position for the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs. This would only occur if the Chicago Bears lose to the Detroit Lions. If they do, they’ll face the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the playoffs. If they can somehow secure a third seed, that would send them to face a much more favorable opponent.
The surprise passer of the draft class Tanner McKee has dazzled in his minimal run this season. He’s 33-for-48, 356 yards, four TDs and no picks. His poise in the pocket, ability to manipulate defenses and accuracy on sound throws has him getting raving reviews from head coach Nick Sirianni.
“When you see Tanner, he’s really good about knowing where to go with the football, seeing the defense and being able to deliver things accurately,” – Nick Sirianni.
Beyond the on-field learning interpretations, Sirianni highlighted the importance of developing camaraderie within the QB room.
“It’s a great room where those guys feed off each other and learn from each other.” – Nick Sirianni.
In addition to Hurts, the Eagles may proceed without A.J. Brown, who recently suffered a knee injury during their matchup against the New York Giants. The Eagles’ priorities are simple at this point: keeping their key players healthy as they prepare for the playoff run. Last year’s disappointment still stings, particularly following their loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round.
While resting starters may influence their chances of winning against Washington, the Eagles remain committed to balancing competitive spirit and player safety. This calculated strategy is indicative of their bigger picture, long-term plan as they aim for a deeper playoff run than 2022.
