Looking forward to a thrilling 2025 NFL season! The Football Power Index (FPI) recently announced its first team ratings. The Philadelphia Eagles, fresh off their championship victory, lead the pack with a formidable defense that distinguishes them from other teams. The New Orleans Saints are pegged dead last in ESPN’s rankings, looking down at a dismal season on the horizon. These rankings take into account performance, health, and the overall difficulty of each team’s schedule.
So as the league gears up for what is sure to be another offensive-oriented season, the Eagles’ D could be a key factor in their success. With six wins in a row the Eagles have spoken well and truly established themselves as the team to beat. Their jaw-dropping assembly features linebacker Zack Baun, defensive tackle Jalen Carter and cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. Their defensive defense is the foundation of their title defense. Beyond all these other reasons, it makes a strong example for the rest of the league to follow.
Eagles’ Defensive Strength
The Eagles’ defense has earned itself a bad-boy reputation, and with it, a new swagger. The combination of experienced players and emerging talent creates a unit capable of shutting down opposing offenses. As a former safety with hyper-modern tackling ability, linebacker Zack Baun pairs really nicely with Jalen Carter’s chaos agent act on the defensive line. Together, they create a wall that almost no team in MLS can get through.
Cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean help to bolster the depth behind this loaded roster of defensive standouts. Their speed and ability to play the ball in the air has simply made it impossible for opposing quarterbacks to locate open targets. This defensive strength is the No. 1 reason why the Eagles have held on to the No. 1 position of the FPI rankings. Regardless of whom they face again, as they get ready to repeat as champions, repeating that performance will be key.
Of course it’s not just player talent. Especially when you consider that the Eagles’ defensive blueprint has been a winning formula in clutch moments. Through their relentless pursuit of the ball and opponents’ scoring chances, they’ve proven themselves to be one of the most overwhelming defensive juggernauts the league has seen. This season’s FPI rankings are a testament to just how far a defense like that can take you in the long-term quest for success.
Offensive Rankings and Team Performance
As good as the Eagles are on defense, the top five squads in the FPI feature some of the best offensive talent in the country, too. These rankings continue to illustrate that you must have a combination of offense and defense to thrive in the NFL in 2023. The Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers both recently posted high-scoring offenses. This scoring authority is key to their full most favorable rankings in increasing their overall rankings.
The 49ers, in particular, are expected to be a formidable contender if they can maintain player health throughout the season. Last year’s injuries to key players like Brandon Aiyuk, Christian McCaffrey, and Trent Williams would hinder any team. Plus they’re running on a soft schedule this season. Having faced the Giants, Browns, and Bears, they are positioned for an impressive bounce-back season.
The Minnesota Vikings sit 15th – hardly a glowing recommendation for a team that wrapped up last year at 14-3. Their dominant defense helped them hang tough, but their scarcity of punch on the other end proved too much to overcome in crucial moments. This highlights the intricate balance teams must strike between both sides of the ball to achieve lasting success in the league.
Challenges Ahead for Other Teams
The NFL landscape is not merely defined by top-performing teams. Several clubs face significant challenges as they look toward the upcoming season.
Cleveland Browns
The Browns are drawing one of the most difficult slates in the league. Consequently, they only have a 12% chance to win the No. 1 pick in that 2026 draft. Their road does look intimidating, though that may force them into a re-tooling period based on how they manage their opening pair of matchups.
Additionally, with the New Orleans Saints facing a difficult schedule and question marks at quarterback, their play may not help them this time around. Rookie Tyler Shough or second-year player Spencer Rattler should lead the offense. There’s an opportunity for them to rapidly reconfigure their efforts to move up from the back of the pack. The onus will be on both musicians to deliver a magical experience despite the incredibly difficult circumstances.
Meanwhile, teams are preparing for training camps and preseason games. Their attention will turn towards refining their strategies and addressing any obvious gaps. With each club focused on earning a playoff spot and pursuing their own championship dreams, the new season is sure to be closely contested.
Super Bowl Contenders
As excitement ramps up for Super Bowl LVIII, the Eagles, Bills and 49ers are among the early favorites. Each of them has at least an 8% chance at capturing the division’s honored crown — as projected by FPI. The numbers show there’s an overwhelming chance that this year’s Super Bowl winner will be crowned from a select few teams. In fact, we’re looking at a mind-boggling 50% likelihood!
The Ravens are absolutely crushing the AFC North, both in performance and a staggering 54% division-title likelihood. The Bengals are a distant third, with just a 29% chance to win it all. Plus, their new quarterback Joe Burrow was 3rd in QBR as a rookie last season. Though the Bengals had a disappointing first round exit from last year’s playoff run, they are still serious contenders. Their odds of making this season’s playoffs are at 60%.
