Landon Dickerson, a star guard formerly at Alabama, has made Pro Bowl as an Eagle since 2022. Sadly, that future suddenly grew quite murky when he went down with a right leg injury in the team’s open practice on Sunday night. The injury occurred late in a nearly two-hour practice at Lincoln Financial Field. At the same time, alarm bells are ringing about his preparedness for the Chicago Bears’ regular-season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on September 4.
Late in practice, Dickerson wiped out on a pass protection drill. Quarterback Jalen Hurts launched a touchdown strike to running back Saquon Barkley on the opposite side of the field. Since the injury was so serious, medical personnel responded quickly. They assisted Dickerson off of the field and eventually carted him inside for additional treatment. He was added to the injury report as a limited participant on Saturday due to a knee injury. This week he was not listed on the injury report for Sunday.
At just 26 years old, Dickerson has established himself as a crucial element of one of football’s most formidable offensive lines. His performance has been equally important in propping up Saquon Barkley. In the 1994 campaign, Barkley broke the franchise rushing record with 2,504 yards rushing, including playoffs. Dickerson finished the season ranked third in quick pressures allowed, per NFL Next Gen Stats. It’s a testament to his efficiency of protecting the quarterback and improving the run game.
Following Friday’s injury incident, physicians have since assured that Dickerson will only need a “minor procedure.” This surgery will fix his torn meniscus in his right knee. They’ve since retroactively labeled his recovery as week-to-week. They are now optimistic that he’ll be set to go for their Sept. 10 season opener. His loss would be devastating to the Eagles’ offensive game plan for this week’s Super Bowl. It will limit their effectiveness in protecting Hurts and fielding their impressive rushing attack.
Needless to say, Eagles coaching staff and fans alike are crossing their fingers while waiting for word on Dickerson’s condition. He’s just the fifth guard ever to receive a Pro Bowl nod in each of his first four seasons. His invaluable experience and talent level tremendously bolster the Eagles’ roster. As for New York’s overall offense, Judge’s return will be essential to turning things around. It will further raise their general level of good vibes as they head into the very best expected game against their arch-rival, division-mates.
