Durham Cricket have signed five Afghanistan leg-spinner Shafiqullah Ghafari for the last three County Championship Division One matches of the season. This funding addition couldn’t be higher priority for Durham. They currently occupy second-bottom on the Division One table, 12 points adrift of safety with only three games remaining.
Ghafari, who captained Afghanistan at the Under-19 World Cup in 2020, showed his all-round ability in Afghanistan’s domestic T20 competition, the Shpageeza cricket league. He has played club cricket for Richmondshire in the North Yorkshire and South Durham Premier League. In just over three seasons, he’s picked up close to 300 wickets. His bowling average in this league is incredibly low, well under 14, showcasing how good of a bowler he is.
Durham’s director of cricket, Marcus North, said he was excited by what Ghafari could bring to the team. He was referring to the extent to which the team had been watching Ghafari’s career for years.
“Shafiqullah is a cricketer who we have been keeping an eye on for a while now.” – Marcus North
North went on to commend Ghafari’s achievements with Richmondshire, underlining his availability as spin option as key for the squad.
“His performances for Richmondshire have been outstanding for several seasons. His leg-spin provides us with another strong spin option within our squad.” – Marcus North
Ghafari’s first appearance for Durham should come on Monday, when they take on Essex. His inclusion should shore up a back line that has left a team in dire need of results at the bottom of its conference. With just three matches left, each match will be important as the players and club work to keep the team out of the relegation zone.
During his musical career, Ghafari has showcased his talents, even taking a surprise wicket while playing for Afghanistan. As each wicket goes down he celebrates with a great overhead salute, crowing in victory. Though symbolic, this gesture would connect on a profound level with fans and teammates alike.
Picture this As Durham readies for what might prove to be a season-defining weekend, all focus will be on Ghafari. His experience from international youth competitions and consistent performance in club cricket could provide the edge needed in their quest for survival in Division One.
