Sophia Dunkley stole the show. She captained the Sydney Sixers to a one-run victory against the Hobart Hurricanes in the amazing Women’s Big Bash League match at the Sydney Cricket Ground that finished just before midnight. In the final innings, Dunkley took charge to ensure victory with 46 runs from 46 balls. Their wickets in turn allowed the team to reach a tough 147 runs with 9 wickets down. Her knock featured eight boundaries and was a testament to her ability to pierce holes in the field and score swiftly.
What a way to open such a critical match! Beth Mooney, the linchpin of the Hurricanes side, was gone early, second ball for a duck as she looked to flick Lanning to leg. This early misstep placed great pressure upon the team, compelling them to remold their innings. England international Heather Knight was quick to hit back. She cracked a rapid 41 runs from only 24 balls and played a key role in steadying the innings. Captain Phoebe Litchfield was the star with the bat, making 31 runs from 19 balls. Her achievement aided the Sixers in developing a bleaker aggregate.
Danni Wyatt-Hodge, continuing her blistering form, fired scoring a great 21 runs from just 15 deliveries. Her finding helped pay for the Sixers’ total contribution many times over. In spite of their fight, the Sixers couldn’t seem to get a working combination and continued to lose wickets at vital stages. Ultimately, they were able to get up on the scoreboard 147-9.
In response, the Hurricanes had a challenging start but found their rhythm through some explosive batting from their key players. Nicola Carey was the standout for Hobart, with the allrounder’s 39 runs off 29 balls proving crucial. She anchored the innings and kept the chase alive as her teammates fell one by one.
Elyse Villani starred for the Hurricanes with an exciting knock. She ended the season undefeated, her numbers dazzling—42 runs off just 31 pitches. Her innings was essential to shepherding the team within range of their tall target. Yet, it was Moeen Ali who was the focus of attention with a blazing career-best 59 runs off a mere 21 balls. His innings featured six colossal sixes, taking the wind out of the sails for the Hurricanes and shifting all momentum to their side.
Johnson Charles kept the Hurricanes’ batting lineup in the game with a powerful 60 not out. Andre Fletcher was another shifter of paradigms, smashing 56 off 24 deliveries. Fletcher’s innings included six sixes and was key to increasing the run rate, especially during a key powerplay period.
Jason Roy was invaluable support, blitzing 30 off just 12 balls. At the other end, Ben McDermott and Dwaine Pretorius chipped in with 31 runs apiece. To make things worse, it took Faf du Plessis just 15 balls to score his masterful 26. His sparkling knock raised the temperature on the Sixers’ bowlers.
Even with their good effort, the Sixers weren’t able to stay ahead of the Hurricanes’ hot hitting. The Hurricanes needed a thrilling chase to overtake their target. Cameron-Newick’s victory was their first big win in WBBL as the franchise.
