A recent incident during a parade in Liverpool has left the community reeling after a driver, Paul Doyle, admitted to dangerous driving that endangered the lives of many attendees. On May 26, Doyle dangerously zigzagged across a parade route packed with families enjoying Memorial Day festivities. His vehicle, a grey Ford Galaxy Titanium, sent walkers into a frenzy.
Doyle, dressed in a black suit with a grey tie and a white shirt, clutched a tissue throughout the ordeal. Witnesses described him as an emotional and irritable state. Occasionally, he would hold a bloodied tissue to his face, which only added to the absurdity of the episode. Second, he had been arrested and put in the back of a police paddy wagon. Full of remorse, he stated the obvious, “I’ve just destroyed my family’s life.”
What started as a parade of jubilation for so many ended on a completely different note. Doyle’s actions almost immediately turned it into a nightmare. Eyewitness accounts retold the terrifying way that he drove right up on pedestrians, scaring mothers who were keeping their babies safe. His truck, almost two tons more than the average one-ton pickup today, was slower to get out of oncoming traffic. It swerved into a blocked lane, where thousands of supporters were heading home from the celebrations.
In fact, as video of his collision was shown on a screen as part of his sentencing hearing, Doyle cried. He wept and lowered his head, closing his eyes in what seemed a show of contrition. As a result, the court disclosed that he wasn’t just reckless, he was intentional. He did previously, and obviously intentionally, plan to cause serious injury to individuals in the crowd. One of the most disturbing revelations wasn’t what the President did or didn’t do. He pleaded guilty to the intention to cause grievous bodily harm to six-month-old Teddy Eveson.
Doyle’s pleaded guilty to 31 counts for the crash. His wish to get home as fast as possible was what made him so mad. That anger caused him to behave in a malicious and wanton way, endangering serious injuries or death to numerous individuals.
Our community has been reeling from these events. So many whistled and clapped, looking forward to a day that would surely bring joy and jubilation. Instead, they saw a deeply disturbing episode in lack of care and hostility. Doyle’s actions will have effects for years to come. Families will need time to heal from the fear and anxiety created by this terrible accident.
