Drake Powell Commits to NBA Draft, Closing Door on Return to North Carolina

One of the more intriguing talents in college basketball, North Carolina Tar Heels wing Drake Powell, has committed. He’ll sign with an agent and remain undeclared for good. The freshman guard recently declared his intentions to try to break into that top 20 picks limit. He’s looking to do that after averaging 7.4 points on a loaded season. Powell is ESPN’s 32nd ranked draft prospect, causing quite the buzz. His remarkable athleticism at the recent draft combine has only drummed up that buzz even more.

Powell has ultimately chosen a defining path in his career in basketball. He told his coach, Hubert Davis, that he’s staying in the draft. To underscore his commitment, Powell declared that he’s “closed the door” on coming back to Chapel Hill. His aspirations are clear: he seeks a first-round guarantee before making any final decisions regarding his professional career.

The 6-foot-6 Powell tested as one of the best athletes at the draft combine, which has undoubtedly boosted his stock among NBA scouts and executives. His performances have placed him firmly in that 20-35 area of draft projections. That’s a promising sign that he could be a good NBA player one day.

Powell would’ve had a great opportunity at North Carolina too, providing him an opportunity to grow more before taking such a big leap. He’s stoked to be in position to hoist his talents to new heights. “I love the idea of going to Michigan and developing,” he mentioned, indicating his willingness to embrace new challenges in pursuit of his career goals.

Hubert Davis has been on Powell’s side throughout this process. This assistance has been instrumental in allowing Powell to focus all his attention on his draft preparation. “Hubert Davis has been very supportive during this process and I’m glad that he has,” Powell noted, highlighting the importance of mentorship during this critical period.

As Powell heads into deliberation mode, he’s keeping in mind his concentration on the feedback pipeline from NBA teams. When we asked him to predict his trajectory, he sounded a pretty confident note, saying, “Right now, I’m all-in on the draft.” This conclusion mirrors the attitude of other QB prospects this cycle. Cedric Coward and Milos Uzan are both weighing their respective futures for the pro game as well.

Now with the draft just days away, Powell is focused and alert to the gravity of this moment—the time is now. “Just going out through this week and figure out the feedback I’m getting and figure it out from there,” he added, reflecting on the importance of feedback from coaches and scouts.
