The New England Patriots celebrated a significant win against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, with quarterback Drake Maye delivering a standout performance. Maye was 19-of-23 passing for 230 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Additionally, he contributed to the ground game with 10 rushes for 31 yards and another touchdown, marking a pivotal moment in his young career.
• This game was a career-defining achievement for Maye. He is the first Patriots player other than Tom Brady to throw for two passing touchdowns and rush for one in a game. That stunning accomplishment hadn’t been done since Week 2 of the 2019 season. The win emphasized not just Maye’s personal development but the all-around team development on display.
Maye started the game hot, as he led the Patriots to touchdowns on their first two drives. His opening performance raised the bar, and it was all about his ability to deliver in the moment.
“That felt good. So many ebbs and flows of the game. I’m proud of our guys for sticking with it.” – Drake Maye
And it didn’t escape the notice of his all-star teammates either. Even his teammate Stefon Diggs admired that growth, saying Maye “made a jump from last week.” Overall, Dobbs’ performance earned praise from heads of both teams, with James Franklin highlighting the new young quarterback’s completion rate, boasting just four incompletions on the day.
“It’s hard being a young quarterback, but I feel like he is doing the best job he can, and obviously four incompletions, that’s something to be happy about.” – Stefon Diggs
In addition to his passing success, Maye demonstrated his mobility by scrambling for a six-yard touchdown that gave the Patriots a crucial 23-20 lead late in the game. He deftly escaped the rush and found Rhamondre Stevenson for a gorgeous 55-yard touchdown completion. Stevenson snatched it with one hand and quickly turned it into a spectacular catch-and-run touchdown.
“I thought I overthrew it at first, and he made a great play,” – Drake Maye
Stevenson alleviated concerns about the team’s focus and preparation heading into the game. He underscored their heavy focus on these type of plays during the offseason.
“That’s a play me, all the running backs and Drake and all the quarterbacks have been working on all offseason,” – Rhamondre Stevenson
Even in that victory, Coach Mike Vrabel has stressed there are still areas to improve. Bossie praised the vast majority of Maye’s performance in glowing terms. He added there was more work to do in certain areas.
“There’s a lot of good things and a lot of things we’ll have to fix,” – Coach Mike Vrabel
Maye’s performance came amid some challenges, including 12 accepted penalties during the game and four false starts that disrupted momentum. The inexperienced undercenter QB didn’t flinch, keeping his head and sticking to the game plan.
As for the Patriots, they’ll head back home next week. They will do so in a league with career QBs like Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. This highly anticipated upcoming matchup would be a different test for Maye. He’ll want to use the positive momentum of last year as a springboard to really establish himself as one of the biggest and baddest dudes in the league.
